Brack earns CART pole By The Associated Press FORT WORTH, Texas — Kenny Brack, the only CART driver with racing experience at Texas Motor Speedway, earned the pole for the inaugural Firestone Firehawk 600. Brack ran a qualifying lap at 233.447 mph Saturday to take his second CART pole, but insisted afterward that his five Indy Racing League races at the 11/2-mile high-banked track from 1997-99 gave him no edge. He was just a little bit faster than everybody else. "My knowledge of this place didn't give me any advantage," Brack said. "If it's a good car, it's fairly easy to figure out where to run. We'll see tomorrow if I know something more than the others." Of the 25 cars that ran qualifying laps Saturday, 17 of them ran better than 230 mph. Only one car was more than a second slower than Brack. Patrick Carpentier will start on the outside of the front row Sunday after a qualifying run of 233.345. Oriol Servia (232.978), who got just one qualifying lap in before blowing his engine, and Bryan Herta (232.663) will start in the second row. All four have Ford- powered cars. Densham tops qualifying BRISTOL, Tenn. — Funny Car journeyman Gary Densham earned his first No. 1 qualifying effort Saturday in the inaugural Mac Tools NHRA Thunder VaUey Nationals. Densham, a 31-year independent campaigner who recently joined John Force's Funny Car stable, set a Bristol Dragway track record, covering the quarter-mile in 4.870 seconds at 303.71 mph in a Ford Mustang to lead the 16-car field. Kenny Bernstein and Bruce AUen also claimed top qualifying honors in the $1.9 million event. Rahman faces tough bout NEW YORK — Hasim Rahman, the newly crowned heavyweight champion, probably will make his first title defense against Lennox Lewis or Mike Tyson. Cedric Kushner, promoter for the fighter from Baltimore, said Saturday that it's 50-50 on which of the two former champions it will be — he can deal with HBO and Lewis or Show time and Tyson. Rahman shocked the world a week ago as a 20-1 underdog with his seventh-round knockout of Lewis is South Africa. HBO has the rights to Lewis, while Tyson boxes for Show time, a problem that had delayed a Lewis-Tyson fight. Rahman, 35-2 with 29 knockouts, noted that a rematch clause was in the contract with Lewis. But he noted that can't fight for 60 days anyway because of a cut over his left eye. Armstrong falls short MAASTRICHT Netherlands — Erik Dekker held off Lance Armstrong in a sprint over the final hundred yards Saturday to win the 161-mile Amstel Gold Race cycling classic. Armstrong, the two-time winner of the Tour de France, finished second in his only World Cup race this year. Belgium's Serge Baguet was third. Woods' ID thief sentenced SACRAMENTO, California — A man who used Tiger Woods' identity to steal $17,000 worth of goods was sentenced to 20 years-to-life in prison. Anthony Lemar Taylor was convicted of falsely obtaining a driver's license using the name Eldrick T. Woods, Woods' Social Security number and his birth date. Though he looks nothing like golf's best player, the 30-year- old Taylor then used the false identification and credit cards to buy a 70-inch TV, stereos and a used luxury car between August 1998 and August 1999. Prep runs record 800 split PHILADELPHIA —Alan Webb of South Lakes High School in Reston, Va., ran the fastest high school 800-meter split in the history of Penn Relays on Saturday Webb anchored the 3,200-meter relay in 1 minute, 49.1 seconds. The previous record was 1:49.4, set in 1970 by Bob Wheeler of Dulaney High School in Timonium, Md. Webb was handed the baton in first place by about two meters, then extended the lead to more than 50 meters by the end of his first 400. It was a personal best for Webb, who also anchored Friday's record-setting boys' high school distance medley South Lakes broke the Penn Relays record with a time of 9:59.66.
