Signed RHP Vrceni Pes-tano, INF Ore Nash and RHP Michael Ronbus. COLLEGES GOLF ASU QB now playing for Nebraska Scott's 63 low round at Firestone By The Associated Press LINCOLN, Neb. Sam Keller's whirlwind week found him with new teammates Thursday on the Nebraska football practice field. A week ago Keller was Arizona State's starting quarterback. Thursday, he was wearing a green No.

5 practice jersey and preparing to lead the Corn-huskers' scout team. "A lot of things happened really fast, back-to-back-to-back," Keller said. "It came at me really quick, so I had to have my head on straight. It's been fun, though. Once I get settled in here, it's going to be a nice deal." A broken thumb ended Keller's stellar 2005 season prematurely and gave Rudy Carpenter an opportunity to show what he could do.

Carpenter put up big numbers just like Keller, and the two came into the preseason competing for the job. Arizona State coach Dirk Koetter announced Keller had won the starter's job last Friday. But Sunday, Koetter said he had made a mistake and that Rudy Carpenter would be the starter. Keller was given his release and began looking for a new school. He said he picked Nebraska because he likes the Cornhuskers' West Coast offense and believes it is the best vehicle to help him get to the NFL.

As a transfer, Keller can practice but not play in games this season. Next year, he'll be a fifth-year senior and the overwhelming favorite to succeed Zac Taylor as the Huskers' starter. "This place is just a good fit all around," Keller said. "And it seemed like they were really excited to have me. That felt good to be wanted by such a big program." Last year Keller started the Sun Devils' first seven games and completed 58 percent of his passes for 2465 yards and 17 touchdowns.

He broke his thumb trying to stiff-arm an Oregon defender in the seventh game. Shoes CSU special teams coach Dave Arnold scoffed when asked if he thought Kaylor, like most kickers and punters seem to be, is a bit, well, strange. 'Tve had a lot weirder than him. He's nothing compared to some of the guys IVe coached," he said. "I don't care what color his shoes are as long as he does the job." Thafs not the problem His first season as CSLTs full-time punter was one of the best in school history.

However, he's not satisfied. For the third consecutive summer, Kaylor spent time with Hall of Famer Ray Guy at his punting camp. He lifted weights and ran more diligently this summer than ever before. His goals are to average two punts each game placed inside the opposition's 20-yard line, to boost his average hang time from 41 seconds to 45 and average 47 yards per punt "I could have been first in the nation last year, and there still would be room to improve," he said. "My big thing is improving my consistency.

Last year, I had at least one kick every game that was below average. I want to cut down on those bad kicks, and that should help boost my hang time." Arnold said he is expecting big things from Kaylor. "The thing I love about Jimmie is that I don't have to stay on him," said Arnold, who also coaches tight ends. "I can look over at any time during practice, and he is working to improve himself. He doesn't waste a minute of practice." So, if the gold shoes once again can work their magic, Kaylor can continue to chase his goal of leading the nation in punting.

Which, of course, would call for a celebration and what else? a new pair of shoes. Gore, who got into this World Golf Championship by winning the 84 Lumber Classic last year, played with an old friend from his junior golf days in California Woods and settled in quickly with a birdie-eagle-birdie start. The highlight was a 4-wood that he aimed toward the center of the green on the par-5 second hole. He pulled it slightly left, and it wound up 2 feet from the hole. "It's the first time I've played with him since he's been Tiger," Gore said. "Last time I played with him, he was still Eldrick." Woods didn't look nearly as sharp as he was four days ago at Medinah, when he captured his 12th career major with a five-shot victory.

He traded birdies and bogeys until finishing strong with wedges into 8 feet at No. 16 and 12 feet on No. 18 for a 67. This WGC event is for Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup players, along with the top 50 in the world and select winners of tournaments around the world. RENO-TAHOE OPEN At Reno, Will MacKenzie tied a PGA Tour record with three eagles in one round, Including a 52-foot putt, and shot a 9-under 63 to take a one-stroke lead over Bob Estes In the opening round of the PGA Tour event.

MacKenzie had all three of his eagles on par-5s, Including one on which his 293-yard approach shot landed 8 feet from the hole. He tied a tour record set three times earlier this year. MacKenzie's 63, a career best in his second year on the PGA Tour, set a record for the lowest first round at the Montreux Golf and Country Club Course, Estes holed out from 86 yards for an eagle and added seven birdies for his 64. Rich Beem celebrated his 36th birthday with some hot putting and a lucky bounce off a rook in a creek to shoot 66, along with three other players. WENDY'S CHAMPIONSHIP FOR CHILDREN At Dublin, Ohio, Stacy Prammanasudh took advantage of ideal scoring conditions to shoot a 6-under 66 and grab a share of the lead with Jee Young Lee, Kristal Parker-Manzo and Katie Futcher In the LPGA event.

Prammanasudh, Lee, Parker-Manzo who announced after her round that she is retiring after this tournament and Futcher were a shot better than the top two names on the money list, Karrle Webb and Lorena Ochoa. Natalie Gulbts, Brittany Un-clcome, Kris Tschetter, Tina Barrett, Mikaela Parmlid and Soo-Yun Kang joined them at 67. THE TRADTION At Aloha, defending champion Loren Roberts shared a one-stroke lead after the first round of the final major of the Champions Tour season. Roberts, Bobby Wadklns and Wayne Levi each had 67s on the par-72, course at the Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club west of Portland. Continued from Page Dl "I swear that I do not have a shoe problem," she said, laughing.

"However, I do support someone with a shoe problem" She recalled that Jimmie once wore red cleats for one game and donned silver another time during a brilliant high school career during which he quarterbacked Northglenn to three consecutive Front Range League tides. Kaylor's "problem" apparently followed him to CSU. In addition to his booming kicks, he's also known for his signature gold Nike shoes. They must work well because he led the Mountain West Conference and was fourth nationally last year as a sophomore, averaging 453 yards per punt Kaylor has three pairs of the gold shoes each costing $110. Guess who picked up that bill? "He does love his shoes he really does," mom said.

VolleybalL Continued from Page Dl the season, and the Aggies' recruiting class has three high school Ail-Americans and was rated the fourth-best class in the nation by Volleyball Magazine. "It's not a real experienced group, to tell you the truth," Cor-Belli said. "But they're very athletic and there's lots of talent. If a very young and eager group." One of the high-school All-Americans on the Aggies roster is 6-2 left-side hitter Sarah Ammer-man, Colorado's 2005 player of the year as a senior at Chaparral High School Cara Quayle, a 6-1 middle blocker out of Cherry Creek High School, also was part of the five-player recruiting class considered the best in school history. Texas won its first six matches last season, but Corbelli said her team would have been better prepared for the rigors of the Big 12 schedule with a better preseason schedule.

Texas wrapped up last year's nonconfer-ence schedule in a tournament that included then-No. 6 Florida and No. 8 Southern California, along with LSU. The Aggies beat LSU in five games but lost in four games to Florida and Southern California, then dropped 10 of their first 12 conference matches. "I think a strong, solid evaluation this weekend will be really important," she said.

"If we went to a weaker tournament like we did last year, I don't know that we would get near the same feedback." Missouri State, coached by former Hilbert assistant Melissa Stokes, also went to the NCAA Tournament a year ago and finished 24-9. But only one of the team's top four hitters, senior left side Erin O'Connor, returns along with one other starter, senior middle blocker Sarah Lansing. Morgan State went 14-21 a year ago and was picked to finish fourth this season in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The Bears' top player is former Rocky Mountain High School standout Esther Johnson, a 5-7 left-side hitter who had led her team with 507 kills a year ago and had 14 double-doubles in kills and blocks. CSU lost its top three hitters all all-conference perfomers from last year's team but has three starters back in Barnes, a 6-0 sophomore, 5-9 sophomore setter Ashley Fornstrom and 5-11 junior right-side hitter Tonya MokelkL Left-side hitters Jaime Strauss, a 6-1 sophomore, and Katherine Whitney, a 5-9 senior, saw extensive action as defensive players a year ago.

Whitney was the Rams' starting libera, while Strauss played in 94 of the team's 101 games, primarily as a defensive specialist. Ready or not, the revamped Rams will be thrown into the fire tonight. "We need to get out and play some people In order to really answer some questions," Hilbert said. "I'm not going to say we're ready or say weren't not, I just want to get out and play somebody, and maybe that will tell us some things.".
