THE SALINA JOURNAL LIFE SUNDAY, OCTOBER 20, 1996 B5 V PET TIPS Don't take your pet trick-or-treating Dear Heloise: I work for an animal protection organization in Washington, B.C., and I've compiled tips on safeguarding compan- * ion animals. I thought you might Wish to share some of my Halloween tips with your readers. • Keep animals, especially black cats, inside on the night before and on Halloween. !--J)ogs should be indoors too. HELOISE King Features SSme children think letting dogs otif. of their yard is a great Halloween trick, but it's a terrifying experience for the dog who becomes lost, running from the noise and strangely dressed people. Dogs may also become injured if children poke at them through fences. • For everyone's safety, put animals in a secure room during trick-or-treat time. Cats can quickly slip out the front door, and dogs sometimes try to bite unsuspecting children, thinking they're intruders. . -Don't take dogs trick-or-treating, as they can become frightened by laughing and screaming children and run off or bite someone. • Keep candy out of animals' reach, and make sure children know not to share their goodies With four-legged friends. All candy can cause animals to become sick, and chocolate, which contains an ingredient poisonous to dogs, can kill. : v Jack-o'-lanterns lit up by candles can burn animals (and children) or start fires if tipped over. Balloons or party favors, if swallowed, can block an animal's di- ges'tive tract. :'•; Remember that animals aren't party props. Fido may look cute wearing a witch's hat, but many animals become upset if forced into clothing. Costumes that are kept in place with tight rubber bands can cut off circulation. - By taking a few simple precautions, everyone — humans and animals alike — can have a safe and happy Halloween. — Paula Moore, Rpckville, Md. •« Dear Paula: You said it for all our four-legged animal friends! Halloween can be pretty scary from their point of view. Thanks for the good hints. Woof! Woof! — Savvi, Black Jack and J.D. Dear Heloise: I save used gift- wrap for making book covers for those I own and books that I borrow from the library. This can also be used for schoolbooks. I once used fabric to cover a book.— Dorothy Sossamon, Metairie, La. Dear Heloise: I purchase applesauce and similar products in six- packs of the individual-serving size. I recycle the containers, filling them with mustard or mayonnaise or the like, centering each on individual hors d'oeuvre trays. Not only are they useful, they look appetizing too. — Kate Campbell, Marlton, N.J. Dear Heloise: When I was car- hunting, I looked through the newspaper and there were quite a few ads I wanted to check out. Rather than writing the phone numbers or cutting out the ads, I used transparent tape to transfer the information. All I did was press the tape firmly on top of the ad and pull it off. The ad transferred perfectly clearly on the tape. When I had all the ads I wanted, I stuck them to a couple of index cards. — Frank Romito, Dallas [Are" You"A | I Nail — I Biter? 50% Off Your first set of sculptured nails with the presentation of this ad.
