One of those films traveled around sections of the country under three different titles: "Phantom of the Subway." "Gang Wars" and "Devil He also had a role as an extra in The Blues Brothers," a 1980 film starring Dan Aykroyd and the late John Belushl, but his scene ended up on the cutting room floor. Casel retired from competition in 1981. "I remember that day. I decided I didn't want to do any more interviews or travel anymore," he says. "It was time for me to put my energies toward teaching students." He has been the chief instructor for the Glen Burnie branch of the Dennis Brown Shaolin Wu-Shu Academy for the past two years.

He seems to enjoy teaching as much as he enjoyed his days as a competitor. "I can honestly say it's extremely rewarding to see the fruits of your labor," he says. "When you take someone who came in without confidence and then see them do it right, that's great. The look on their faces when they do something they hadn't been able to do before I let them know, you did It. It's not me.

you did it." Casel, who said he plans to move to Glen Burnie, often can be found at the Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard facility six days a week. He teaches about 100 students, 60 percent of them adults. They range in age from 4 to 45. and pay an average of $40 to $60 a month. "I'm going to get you in great shape," he promises his new classes.

"You will have a good time and will meet other Interesting people. You will improve yourself by improving your energy and stamina. We're also hoping to teach the person about their inner spirit." The principles of the academy are outlined on a yellow poster at the entrance of the two-story brick building, which also houses a laundromat. "To seek perfection of character. To be sincere and honest.

To practice courtesy. To refrain from violent behavior," the sign reads. Those who do not seem willing to abide by those principles are not accepted for training, Casel says. "We have turned down several people because we find their personality and life style Isn't conducive to the atmosphere of the academy," he explains. The body Is not the only thing being trained through martial arts.

School students must maintain at least a average to remain In good standing with the academy. "Anyone who comes In at a lower level than average knows that they have to bring it up," Casel says. "I have to see report cards. We give patches to kids who achieve a high academic level an A. If a student comes In with a average, I sit down with his or her Continued from Page 34 his neighborhood.

He sought refuge in the martial arts. "Once I got involved, I thought It was amazing," he says. "It gave me a chance to do something on my own and better myself physically and mentally. I took to it immediately. My Instructor told me I was a natural." He competed In his first national tournament, the U.S.

Karate Association Grand Nationals, in 1967. "I remember coming back home after I had won one division. I was excited." he recalls. "A little while later, I was reading a national magazine and there was my name. That was the greatest moment for me.

I remember thinking to myself. 'One day they're going to do an article on me. Just me. But then I said, forget that. I'll be on the cover.

I'll be known throughout the Tayari" is an East African name which means "one who Is always ready." Casel believes there Is a lot to a name. "If you try to live up to certain goals," he says, "you should be able to reach them." It was not long before Casel had reached his goal of being featured on the cover of a karate magazine.
