Chockie, 91, the man credited with being the first American to fire a shot at the enemy during World War died October 5 and was buried Thursday with military honors in Fort Logan National Cemetery. According to the Oct 13, 1917 issue of Sea Power, a Navy publication, Chockie, a corporal in a Marine detail on duty at the Guam harbor, fired that first shot on April 6, 1917, the day President Woodrow Wilson declared war on Germany.
