He loved "the art of the sale." Karl enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, tennis, skiing, racquetball and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Doris Gilbert Schakel; his children, Peter Schakel, Leslie VandeWalle, Karl G. Schakel, Nancy Paul and Eric Schakel; his brother, Jack Schakel; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
