B2, LOCALREGIONSTATE, The Coloradoan, Thursday, September 12, 2002, www.coloradoan.com Cadets soaring in new gliders 'mf Dead infant found Wednesday in Greeley The Weld County Sheriffs Office found a dead infant in the area of Colorado Highway 85 and Weld County Road 2V2 in unincorporated Weld County around 9 a.m. Wednesday. Employees from a neighboring business found the infant wrapped in a baby blanket under a bush. An autopsy determined that the baby was born alive between 10 p.m. Tuesday and 2 a.m.

Wednesday. A cause of death has not yet been determined. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the sheriffs office at (970) 392-4565. Coloradoan staff and wire services house for hours was wounded by police when the standoff ended in a cloud of tear gas Wednesday. Joshua Leigh, 28, suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds after he jumped out of a window and pointed a rifle at police at about 2:30 p.m., Sgt.

John Gates said. Leigh's grandmother told police she spent the night in her car after Leigh allegedly asked her to shoot him Tuesday evening. Officers responded to the house about 11 a.m. Wednesday when somebody else called police. Leigh and his dog were in the house.

During a short telephone conversation with a negotiator, Leigh told police: "This is my day to die." Criminal charges were pending. athletes, the opportunity to fly. "We couldn't take everyone up, that was the big reason," said Lt Col. Phillip Beaudoin, director of operations for the 94th Flying Training Squadron. "It wasn't a Soar-For-All program." The academy's soaring program, called Soar-For-All, is intended to give all cadets a taste of flying.

The two-seaters can carry roughly 440 pounds vs. the old ones with a weight capacity of about 360 pounds. Unlike the old gliders, the new ones have an instrument panel in the back so the instructors don't have to look over students' shoulders to see altimeter, air speed indicator and other instruments. The new gliders have longer wings and less drag, allowing cadets to stay in the air longer on each flight. 'This plane loves to fly," said senior cadet Bailyn Beck, gently pulling the plane out of a planned nose-high stall at about 9,500 feet over the Air Force Academy.

"It doesn't like to be on the ground." Beck, an instructor pilot, said the Blaniks are far more sensitive than the old American-made Schweizers that the academy used for decades. "If a student just thinks about where he wants to go, the plane will respond," he said. The academy considered buying Blaniks in 1995 but ditched the plan after flight tests revealed the plane was unstable, Beaudoin said. "There must have been something wrong with it. It didn't fly straight," he said.
