Stewart Sun Staff Correspondent COLLEGE PARK The University of Maryland made Chris Wel-ler's 300th coaching win one to remember, posting a 65-50 upset of Long Beach State in the championship game of the Maryland Invitation Tournament at Cole Field House last night.

Maryland (8-2), ranked No. 14, had lost, 84-69, to the sixth-ranked 49ers (7-2) In a tournament final at Lawrence, a month ago. This time, the Terps were in command most of the way in winning their fourth straight. Long Beach, however, threatened to make a run at the lead In the closing five minutes. Three foul shots and a basket by Terri Bradley helped preserve the triumph.

The win pushed Weller's record to 300-1 1 7 for 1 5 seasons, all at her alma mater. Dale Hodges of St. Joseph's, a 91-55 winner over the University of Maryland Baltimore County In the consolation game, was selected the tournament's outstanding player. The 6-foot-1 senior center totaled 58 points and 33 rebounds In two games. She was Joined on the all-tournament team by Bradley, Subrena Rivers and Christy Winters of Maryland and Penny Moore and Angelique Lee of Long Beach State.

Long Beach led by a basket twice In the first two minutes before a three-point shot by Estelle Christy made It 7-4, sending the Terps in front to stay. The widest margin of the half was 31-20 after Carta Holmes made two foul shots with 3 minutes, 44 seconds to play. At halftime, Maryland led, 36-26. Neither team shot particularly well, but the Terps held a 23-15 rebound advantage and a wide margin at the foul line, 1 1-for-12tol-for-3. Maryland lengthened its lead with an 8-2 burst at the start of the second half and with 13:33 left.

It was 48-30. That turned out to be the widest gap, as Trise Jackson led the 49ers back into It. A Jackson basket pulled the 49ers within 58-48, and a minute later it was 60-50 with 4:31 left, but the rally brought them no closer. This was about our best defensive game of the year," Weller said.
