6C SPORTS THE SUN SUNDAY DECEMBER 24. 1989 COLLEGE BASKETBALL No. 6 Michigan holds off Seton Hall, 91-86 Hurley leads No. 12 Duke past Washington, 74-64 HJ. 4 Willi III I lH Hlill.lllH.JA.lljlJ.llllWlm ACC Mi; "-ti gp T.bURHAM, N.C.

Freshman Bbbfiy Hurley scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half last night, sparking 12th-ranked Duke to a 74-64 victory over Washington. "In the first half I was standing around." Hurley said. "I didn't have any impact on the offense at all." Coach Mike Krzyzewski and his sfafTtold Hurley to get inside on Washington's zone defense and try to make something happen. "I figured I had to start penetrating so I could get something done." Hurley said. "The guys on the team expect certain things from me.

When I don't do that, it throws the offense out of balance." 't- Hurley's scoring lifted the Blue Devils (5-2) out of a close game, offsetting a rebounding edge by Washington (4-4). His passing led to key baskets late in the game. A layup by Hurley off a steal with 18 minutes, 25 seconds left gave the Blue Devils a 43-38 lead, but the Huskies rallied to lead, 48-47. when Doug Meeklns scored on a running jumper from the right side with 14:56 left. Hurley made the front end of a ohe-and-one with 14:28 left to tie the-score.

Phil Henderson's three-point basket 10 seconds later gave Duke the lead for good, and Hurley capped the 7-0 run with a three-pointer with 13:50 left for a 54-48 lead. The Huskies got to 60-58 when Mike Hayward made two free throws with 10:32 left. Hurley came back with a three-pointer with 9:32 left, and Duke coasted thereafter. Hurley had assists on two of Duke's last four baskets, finishing with six assists.
