Mendocino College Invitational basketball tourney begins tomorrow Wedpesday, December 2,1981 Uklah Dally Journal, Ukiah, Darrin Nelson All-Pac 10 for fourth time To paraphrase Martin Luther King, the Mendocino College men's basketball team is "Home at Last." The Eagles, who have had basketball tournaments three and four weeks running, playing everywhere but home, make their home, Ukiah Fairgrounds-Carl Purdy Pavilion debut Thursday night, playing the fourth game of the first night of the Eagles' Invitational, against Cabrtllo, of Aptos. biggest of all Mendocino College Eagles' Invitational Tournament deserves star billing of its own, but is being held at a time when Anderson Valley and Ukiah high schools also have top competitive tournaments, Wednesday through Saturday at Boonville; and Thursday through Saturday, at Ukiahi. Ukiah Valley basketball fans and players will have an opportunity to see some top community college basketball players, in addition to the fledgling 1981-82 Eagles, In action each of the next three nights. First round pairings match Gavilan, of Gilroy, against College of the Redwoods, of Eureka, at 3 p.m., Thursday; Solano College, of Fairfield, and College of the Slskiyous, of distant Weed, at 5 co-tourney favorites Butte College and Napa, at 7:00 p.m., and host Mendocino, led by leading scorer Dwayne Williams, and Butte Invitational All-Tourney Doug Perkins, against Cabrillo, at 9 p.m.. Anderson Valley tourney starts today BOONVILLE The Anderson Valley Invitational Basketball Tournament also known as the Redwood Classic In this 23rd year opens today and tonight with four games, the third of which, at 6:30 p.m., will feature Anderson Valley's strong Varsity against Geyserville, a school which concentrates on basketball and baseball.

If the Boonville basketeers want to enjoy a night Thursday watching the Mendocino College Eagles in their first-night play in the Eagles' Invitational tournament, then Coach Gene Waggoners Panthers are going to have to win tonight. Other games this afternoon and evening match Laytonville and Mendocino, at 3p.m.; Calistoga and Willits, at 5:30 p.m.; and Clear Lake and Potter Valley, at 8 p.m., after Anderson Valley's tourney debut. If the Panthers defeat Geyserville at 6:30 tonight they dojiot come back until Friday action. Games 5-6-7-8 in the Redwood Classic are slated Thursday, at 3:30, 5,6:30 and 8 p.m.; while quarter-final action begins at 10:30 a.m. Friday and continues until the 9 p.m.

Teams will be vying for first, second, third and consolation championship trophies; there will be a sportsmanship trophy, a school spirit trophy, nine All-Tournament awards; and a Most Valuable Player award, at tourney's end, late Saturday. There will be daily or session admission charges, and there is a special all-games tourney ticket at a reduced price, at the door. The Nelson, who set an NCAA all-purpose yards record, and Marcus Allen of Southern California, who set an NCAA single- season rushing mark, headed the All- Conference team announced Tuesday by Pac-10 executive director Marcus Allen Pac-10 MVP WALNUT CREEK (UPI) Record setting running back Marcus Allen of Southern California has been named the Pacific-10 Conference's 1981 football player of the year. Allen, a senior from San Diego, carried the ball 403 times for 2,343 yards and 22 touchdowns.

He is the first player in NCAA history to rush for at least 2,000 yards in a single season. He led the Pac-10 and the nation in rushing and scoring and along the way set 10 NCAA records in all. AU-PCAA grid team Ukiahi Varsity girl cagers top Fort Bragg The Ukiahi Varsity basketball girls opened their season at Fort Bragg Wednesday evening, scoring a promising 44 -28 victory, built on team defense, individual and collective offensive improvement, and sheer hustle. The Jayvees were not quite so fortunate, falling 33-28, at Fort Bragg. Tomorrow evening, Thursday, both the Ukiahi Varsity and Jayees face perhaps even stronger tests in playing at Potter Valley, at 6 and 7 :30 p.m. Paula Corippo, with including five field goals, plus 11 rebounds, paced the Ukiahi Varsity victory under Coach Bill Brunemeyer.

Brunemeyer also watched with pleasure the constant hustle and strong defensive efforts of his girls, who held Fort Bragg to no more than six points a quarter most of the game. Strong scoring and rebounding also marked the play of Sheila Chaconas, with a game-high 15 points and five rebounds; and nine rebounds and six points by Lisa Jordon, a fine freshman basketball prospect Veteran cagers Luoma and DisGrazzi, with 11 points and eight, including six free shots by the latter, paced Fort Bragg's Varsity.
