By John W. Stewart The University of the District of Columbia was late getting to the game and even slower getting into it, as Loyola College opened a 12-0 lead and went on to a 62-49 triumph at Reitz Arena last night. Bus problems led to the game's starting 20 minutes late, and shooting problems due in part to a good defensive effort by Loyola led to the fall of the Firebirds (1-1), playing for the first time In a week. Sophomore guard Kevin Green had 1 8 of his game-high 30 points In the first half, as Loyola took a 29-20 lead. A 10-2 run at the start of the second half opened a 17-polnt cushion, before UDC came scrapping back.

The Firebirds sliced the margin to 43-36 with 9 minutes, 10 seconds left, but could get no closer. "It's a young team, and I thought we did a decent Job," UDC coach George Leftwlch said, "although our shooting could have been better." Sophomore Larry Holbeck was the only starter who was at UDC last year, and he was joined by three freshmen and Keith Goodie, ajunior from Baltimore via Dunbar High School and Essex Community "1 was a little nervous; you press trying to do well for your family and friends," said Goodie, who had 10 points, two assists, three steals and seven turnovers. "Our defense was OK, but we didn't stick to our offense, and our shooting was off." This was particularly true In the first half, In which UDC went l-for-9 from the foul line and shot 36 percent from the field. Loyola, out-rebounded. 24-12, in the first half, was about even with the opposition in the second half.

Tom Schneider, getting his first win as Loyola's coach after an opening-game loss, cited his team's good defensive effort In the second half as an Important factor. This was especially true during a three-minute span late in the game, when the Greyhounds went on a 9-2 run to open a 59-42 lead with 2:56 left. "We were able to run our offense, and our defense was better," said Green, comparing this effort with the 82-69 loss at George Washington Saturday. "And the early lead gave us some confidence." John Boney came off the bench to turn In a strong effort. The surge gave Hofstra a 67-65 lead and left Navy coach Pete Herrmann pacing in front of the bench. But Gottschalk came through to prevent disaster for Navy.

"We Just fell asleep in the opening minutes of the second half," said Herrmann. "Our kids played so well in the first half, and they Just couldn't continue to play that well. Also, a team with the quickness of a Hofstra is going to give you problems." Erik Harris scored 15 to lead Navy. Jim Shanahan's 14 points led Hofstra. Derrick Flowers, a product of Milford Mill in Baltimore County, had eight points in the first half for Hofstra, but got into foul trouble and finished with only 10 points.

The fans will have to savor the home victory until Jan. 17, when Towson begins East Coast Conference play at the Towson Center against Drexel. The Tigers will play their next 12 games on the road. "The schedule is unique," said Towson coach Terry Truax, whose Tigers have dates at North Carolina and Syracuse in Decemter. "But what I saw last night looked encouraging." The Tigers had three players in double figures last night, with sophomore guard Devin Boyd scoring 19 and senior forward Kelly Williamson adding 11.

The Tigers won despite being out-rebounded, 46-33, by the Bison (0-1). Forward Keith Kirvin led Howard with 16 points. The difference between Howard and us is experience. I would love to take talent over experience, but I feel we have both," Truax said. Truax apparently Is content with the team's depth as well, as he used 1 1 players in the first half. Most impressive among the freshmen was William Griffin, who scored only four but showed great leaping ability and hustle. "Griffin gave us a great effort as a freshman," Truax said.

Gottschalk slept through the first game of the season and didn't score a point in a loss to Fordham Saturday. Then, last night, Gottschalk was no great shakes until the closing minutes of the game, when the Midshipmen had blown a 25-polnt lead against Hofstra and were trailing, 67-65, with 6 minutes, 57 seconds remaining. Gottschalk suddenly dashed down the court and made two layups to send Navy ahead, 69-67, on the way to an 80-72 victory over the Flying Dutchmen at Halsey Field House. Gottschalk also hit two free throws with 1:17 left to give Navy a 77-69 lead, and he wound up with 13 points.

"It was a confidence problem for me In the first game," said Gottschalk. "I hit a couple of shots tonight, and then, suddenly, I was feeling It again." He scored 15 during a 21 -point spurt, turning a one-point lead into a 61-51 advantage with 5 minutes, 7 seconds to play. Up to that point, the smaller Charleston players negated the Bears' height and bulk advantage with their quickness, discipline and McCants' hot hand. They also were aided by Morgan's first-game jitters.

The Bears threw passes that hit backboards, went over backboards, over teammates' heads and one that sailed right into the Charleston bench. "Our timing was off." Morgan coach Nat Frazier said. "We looked like a team that hadn't had a game." But during the final minutes, the Bears ran the plays that can make them a successful team this season. They got the ball to Damone Williams. Williams, a 6-7, 225-pound senior forward, began making the types of baskets late in the second half that he was missing in the first half layups and finished with 19 points.

He scored nine during a 13-point run that pulled the Bears within 65-64 with 1:28 left, but McCants drew a fifth foul on Williams with 48 seconds left. McCants missed both free throws. Shenandoah has averaged 101 points in beating Lynchburg, Newport News and Concord, and returns 10 of 12 players, including four of five starters, from last year 21-9 national tournament team.

Among the starters are Damon Hough (Northwestern), a 6-foot-5 center, and Chris Coles (Walbrook), a 6-6 forward. Mario Pritchett leads the Virginia team in scoring at 18.5, followed by Hough at 17.1. UMBC had trouble playing with a lead in both its games, although it held off Florida International, 73-71, before losing to Miami, 91-74. Senior guard Larry Simmons, who had 25 points against Florida International, came back with 1 7 in the first half, as the Retrievers bolted to a 16-point lead and went off in front, 44-34. A full-court press and a near-shutout (three points) of Simmons helped 'he Hurricanes gain control.
