MONDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1989 THE SUN SPORTS 11C COLLEGE BASKETBALL Tonight's games Morgan has experience, motivation Bowers, No. 9 Arkansas run past Oregon, 102-75 Augusta (1-0) at Maryland (1-0) Roundup Site: Cole Field House. College Park, 7:30 p.m. Radio: WBAL (1090 AM), WMAL (630 AM) Outlook: Each side had a season-opening blowout at home Saturday, as Maryland routed Delaware State, 87-53, and Augusta stopped Piedmont, 105-56. Maryland spotted its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opponent a 35-21 lead, then went on a 66-18 run in the final 22:34.

Sophomore Jerrod Mustaf had a career-high 30 points in Gary Williams' coaching debut at his alma mater. Nine of the 13 Terrapins scored. For Augusta, a member ol the Division I Big South Conference, Clint Bryant enters his second season as head coach at the Georgia school. There are 10 veterans from a 5-23 team, including Tim Daniels, a 6-foot-5 senior forward who averaged 17.1 points and 6.5 rebounds last seasons. Still, the Jaguars are a predominantly sophomore-freshman squad.

Alter Augusta, Maryland plays this weekend in the Central Fidelity Classic in Richmond, facing South Carolina Friday. January against Creighton, Drake, Marquette and Arkansas State will toughen Morgan by the time It opens MEAC play at home Jan. 6 against South Carolina State. Those early games usually result in losses the Bears played at Missouri when It was ranked No. 1 last season but helps the program In other ways, Frazier said.

"We play the major Division I's to financially supplement our program," said Frazier of the monetary guarantees Morgan gets from such games. "But sometimes we need games like that to let our players know where we are to let them know what It's like at the top. Just to learn things from the top teams adds to the experience we need." Morgan started strong in conference play last season, going 5-1 but finished at 9-7. Frazier said he hopes this team will be able to avoid those down times. "We were up and down, we were immature, we were a young club," Frazier said.

"When they face the situation again like they had last year, hopefully they'll face up to It better. "Our guys have been around the conference and should know what to expect. If we play together and smart, we will be there." rV-s UMBC (1-0) at Miami, Fla. (0-0) LITTLE ROCK, Ark. Arlyn Bowers didn't score for ninth-ranked Arkansas yesterday, but his defense was noticed In a 102-75 victory over Oregon.

Bowers played 10 minutes and missed all three of his shots. "Arlyn Bowers picked up our defensive intensity," coach Nolan Richardson said after Lee Mayberry scored 20 points to lead the Razor-backs. "They took our Intensity away by spreading the floor and trying to lull us to sleep, but Arlyn took care of that." Mayberry scored 1 0 in the opening minutes and another eight during a second-half run. Mayberry hit two three-pointers to help the Razor-backs (2-0) to a 27-10 lead with 14 minutes, 20 seconds left in the first half. Oregon (0-1 trailed by 1 2 at the half and closed to 60-53 with 13 minutes left in the game.

NAT FRAZIER Likes Bears' chances In MEAC Site: Miami Arena, Miami, 7:30 p.m. Outlook: The Retrievers opened their season with a 73-71 victory over Florida International Friday night. Senior guards Larry Simmons (25 points) and Levi Franklin (17) led the way, but junior-college transfer Derrick Reid gave them a big lift with 17 points. They must improve on their free-throw shooting (11-for-22). Two starters return for the Hurricanes, which are coming off a 19-12 season under Bill Foster, who last week announced that he was leaving Miami after the season.

versatile players this season. "We have some great combination players," he said. "For the first time In 30 some years of coaching, I can say I have that." Frazier said he hopes a four-game road trip in late December and early Morgan at a glance By Jerry Bembry The setting was the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament at Greensboro Coliseum last March. A two-point loss to South Carolina State had ended Morgan State's season at 15-14 its first winning season since moving to National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I this decade. But don't tell coach Nat Frazier about moral victories.

"We have let the kids know they had an opportunity right in their COLLEGE BASKETBALL 1989-90 One of a series hands and let it get away," Frazier said. "We made sure they understand how important it Is to win the conference we had a chance to get Into the NCAA tournament." Coming within two victories of gaining an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament something a Baltimore team never has done is the point Frazier has been driving home to his players since practice started a month ago. The Golden Bears will begin their NCAA quest tomorrow, when they play the College of Charleston at Hill Field House. With key players returning from last season, and an impressive group of freshmen, Morgan enters the season picked to finish second in the conference behind Coppin State in a preseason poll of MEAC coaches. It's a position Frazier likes.

"I would say our chances of being a serious contender are pretty good," Frazier said. "We have an experienced team. We are a little better than last year and have players coming back who understand better what to do. That's a big plus." Leading Morgan will be Damone Williams (6 feet 7, 225 pounds), a senior from Omaha, who last season averaged 18.3 points and a team-high 8.4 rebounds. Williams, an Inside player who also has three-point range, led the team In scoring in the final five games last season and needs 111 points to reach 1 ,000 for his career.

Junior James "Jason" McCoy (6-0, 175), the man responsible for getting Williams the ball last season, switches from point guard to shooting guard this season. McCoy has 243 assists in his first two seasons at Morgan, the fastest any guard has reached that number in school history. "Jason is a tremendous Division I player he's proven that in games against the major Division I teams," Frazier said. Another key returnee from last season Is senior Marcus Sheffield Mount St. Mary (0-1) at Ohio St.

(0-1) Site: St. John Arena, Columbus, Ohio, 8 p.m. Outlook: Mount St. Mary's lost its opener Friday at George Mason, 73-70, missing a three-point try at the buzzer. The Mount's best shooter, Kevin Booth (17 points), fouled out with five minutes left.

Mason's Steve Smith held junior John Miller (Mount St. Joseph), a 15-point scorer last season, scoreless from the field. Ohio State lost at DePaul, 71-53, in the preseason National Invitation Tournament nearly two weeks ago. The Buckeyes were overwhelmed in that one, falling behind 41-16 in the first half. Former Gary Williams assistant Randy Ayers is the new Ohio State coach.

Among his top nine are no seniors and two juniors, including starter Perry Carter, a 6-8 center who averaged 14 points and eight rebounds last season. Last season's record: 15-14 Coach: Nat Frazier, 12th season, 153-95 Arena: Hill Field House. 5,600 Conference: Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Predicted order of finish: 1. Coppin State; 2. Morgan State; 3.

Bethune-Cookman; 9. Maryland Eastern Shore. Outlook: Nine players return from a 15-14 team that recorded the school's first winning season in Division I and advanced to the semifinals of the MEAC tournament. Coach Nat Frazier said the team has better shooters this season, which should open the middle for the Golden Bears' inside players. Damone Williams (6 feet 7, 225 pounds), one of only two seniors, is expected to be a force on the front line.

Williams led the team in rebounding last season (8.4), and averaged 18.3 points. "This is what we like to do give the players and coaches a chance to pull together," coach John Thompson said after two victories over small National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics schools. The fifth-ranked Hoyas beat Hawaii Pacific Saturday night, 79-57, after routing Hawaii Loa Friday night, 109-56. The closer Saturday night game pleased Thompson.

"I was hoping it would be closer," he said. "It gave us a better workout." Thompson wasn't concerned that the margin of victory over a small college wasn't higher. "We would have won by a lot more If I hadn't put the subs in," he said. Mark Tillmon scored 24 to lead Georgetown, GEOROETOWN (79) Jefferson 2-4 2-2 6, Mu-tombo 4-5 0-0 8. Mourning 3-6 6-9 12.
