SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 1989 THE SUN -t SPORTS 5C COLLEGE BASKETBALL Another Robinson gives Navy optimism Navy at a glance Last Mason's record: 6-22. Coach: Pete Herrmann, 44-44. Arena: Halsey Field House, 5,000. Conference: Colonial Athletic Association. H.

IK' Outlook: Navy can only Improve on last year's 8-22 finish. Herrmann is counting an" his veterans, point guard Erik Harris, shooting guard Joe Gottschalk, whose defense has Improved, and team captain and last year's leading scorer Eddie Reddick. all juniors, they have as many minutes of playing time as any Division I players. Watch for the emergence of an excellent freshman class, including Chuck Robinson, younger brother of NBA star and Navy grad David.

Forecasted finish: 1 1-17 (eighth in the CAA). The schedule Herrmann will have to find among the other 1 1 underclassmen. Including seven freshmen, the inside game he must have to compete against Richmond, George Mason and Lefty Driesell's James Madison, considered the elite of the CAA. "We have Cook (6-feet-8) and Reddlck (6-6), but we have two more forwards to find," said Herrmann. Those might be Keith O'Connell, a 6-7, 210-pound freshman, or Robinson, at 6-5, 190 pounds.

Nick Ma-ruslch. a much Improved, 6-9, 235-pound sophomore, and Robert Cat-ten, 6-9 180-pound freshman, will also get a chance. "We have got to be productive Inside," said Herrmann. "And I don't know whether we can be." Navy has been picked to finish eighth and last In the CAA, but that has done little to dampen the enthusiasm that marks each November in college basketball. "I'm optimistic.

Again," said a beaming Harris. "But that's the only way to start the season. "It's OK If they pick us last. We'll be the sleeper. That kind of thing can only motivate us.

"There are a lot of new faces, but even coach says we are coming together very quickly." A lot of new faces. And one very familiar one. Chuck Robinson. It is Date Opponent Time Nov. 25 Fordham 1:30 p.m.

"We have a chance to be good. But how good can we be competing against players who are two years older?" It will be hard for this Navy team not to improve on last year's 6-22 record. It was a terrible year for Herrmann, who had been an assistant during Robinson's glory years and head coach during his senior year. It began when two top players, Byron Hopkins and Matt Nordmann, withdrew from the Academy. It continued as team captain Derric Turner went into a scoring slump from which he never emerged.

"It was the most difficult season we've had in my nine years at Navy." But Chuck Robinson and his freshman teammates are part of one of the best recruiting classes Navy has had since, well, since David Robinson signed up. That group holds the key to Navy's future, although that future may not be now. "Chuck is a good athlete and he Is further along, basketball-wise, that his brother was," said Herrmann, recalling that when David arrived at the Academy, he was Just a very tall person who essentially had to be taught the game of basketball. Herrmann knows he can not rely on Robinson and his classmates yet. "If you have to play two or three n-B -t Yr.

LAM More youngsters may start for Mids By Susan Reimer Sun Staff Correspondent ANNAPOLIS When "Good Morning America" visited the Naval Academy last Friday, they arranged for Academy grad David Robinson to talk by television hook-up with his plebe brother, Chuck. Robinson, the sensational center who led Navy to a 30-5 record as a Junior and a spot in the round of eight In the 1 986 National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball tournament, has finished his abbreviated military commitment and was in Philadelphia with the San Antonio Spurs, earning about $3 million a year.

Chuck, Just a freshman and still adjusting to the rigors of Academy life, took this on the chin from his older brother: "You've got a long way to go." To fill David's shoes? Till graduation? To come back from a 6-22 season? Or all of the above? "They say I play like him, but I don't think I do." said the younger Robinson. (He sure looks like him. It Is almost eery.) "I have my own game 'and my own style. I don't try to mimic anyone. "But If people saying that about me adds pressure, I don't mind.

Any good basketball player wants that pressure." Whether Chuck Robinson eventually equals the ability that made his brother the first player picked in the National Basketball Association draft is not Navy coach Pete Herrmann's Immediate problem. It is on these three that Herrmann will pin his hopes. "They represent 43 returning points," said Herrmann.

"Because of the way things went last season, they have a lot more experience. They have as many minutes as any player In Division I. But we have always had success with senior-oriented teams here, and I don't know whether we can do It any other way." only the beginning of four years of comparisons for this young man. "I could have gone to another school and made my own name," Robinson said, agreeing with the question. "But then I wouldn't have been a graduate of the Naval Academy.
