At tne same price VrT IX Channel 24 Beams Tonight On June 8, 1973, what would have been the day's big story then President Richard Nixon's commencement address at Florida Technological University was supplanted in the headlines of the afternoon Sentinel Star editions by the collapse of the television tower at Bithlo. Two workmen died, two were injured. At the time they were getting ready to install the antenna of WMFE-Channel 24, Orlando's public television station.

WDBO-CHANNEL 6, WFTV-Channel 9, WDBO-FM and WDIZ-FM, whose antennas were already installed and operational, switched to alternate facilities. And Channel 24 continued to broadcast from its 800-foot tower at Winter Garden. Amid the tower wreckage, its inew antenna, still in the shipping crate, lay on the ground. Shortly thereafter, it was moved inside the transmitter building at Bithlo, and there it has stayed. Channels 6 and 9 recently started beaming their signals from the newly erected replacement tower, a structure.

In the nearly two-and-a-half years since the tower collapse, both stations felt the loss in their pocketbooks, the strength of their signals having been diminished. John Newsome, "Channel 24's development director, says the public television station, being non-commercial, measured its loss more in terms of potential. Only by reducing its production staff by two-thirds, declaring a temporary moratorium on locally produced programming and enlisting the financial assistance of a number of local businesses had Channel 24 averted fiscal disaster in December 1972. The outlook wa3 just beginning to brighten when physical disaster struck at Bithlo. HAD CHANNEL 24 gotten on the tower that summer, plans called for offering the instructional programming, already supplied daily to Orange County schools, to as many as five additional Central Florida county school systems.

By doing so, Channel 24 would have been able to prorate the cost, thus decreasing each school system's share of the load while generating funds that would enable the station to start producing instructional programs of its own. This wasn't the only area wherein potential was lost, either.

Because of the undersized tower and too many tan buildings, Channel 24's "market" has remained, according to Newsome, "Orange County, plus cable subscribers, essentially. And there are dead spots in Orange County." This meant Channel 24 which, like al public television stations, had to depend largely on local contributions to supplement inadequate federal funding couldn't broaden its base of viewership. THE ONLY thing to do was, as the saying goes, keep on keepin' on. Which is exactly what Channel 24 has done. And tonight, finally, Channel 24 will start broadcasting from the new Bithlo tower.

Its signal, finally, will blanket Seminole, Osceola and Brevard counties as well as Orange, and reach parts of Lake, Indian River, Volusia and Polk counties. The Federal Communications Commission tele-grammed its consent Thursday night. All that remains, as I write this, is for Channel 24's chief engineer to say the signal is satisfactory.
