Starks, 35, had surgery Tuesday and was hospitalized overnight for a condition called testicular torsion, said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity Starks was released from an undisclosed Salt Lake-area hospital Wednesday He missed Thursday's practice but AUred said Starks might travel Friday to Dallas for Game 3 of Utah's playoff series with the Mavericks. 49ERS BRING BACK STUBBLEFIELD AFTER THREE YEARS' ABSENCE — Dana Stubblefield has returned to the 49ers. San Francisco signed Stubblefield, a free agent released by the Washington Redskins last month, to a six-year deal on Thursday The 6-foot-2, 290-pound Stubblefield spent five seasons with the 49ers — teamed with fellow defensive tackle Bryant Young — before leaving for Washington in 1998. San Francisco general manager BUI Walsh was excited to have the duo back together again. Added to the mix was defensive end Andre Carter, the 49ers' top pick, seventh overall, in last week's draft. LIONS SIGN TIGHT END PETE MITCHELL — The Detroit Lions signed unrestricted free agent tight end Pete Mitchell to a one- year contract on Thursday Mitchell's deal is worth $490,000 with a $225,000 signing bonus, his agent Ralph Cindrich said. Mitchell joined the New York Giants in 1999 as a free agent after four years with Jacksonville. He caught 83 passes in two seasons for the Giants, including a career-high 58 in 1999. He accounted for 765 yards and four touchdowns, including three in 1999. PATRIOTS CUT CORNER- BACK LANGHAM — Corner- back Antonio Langham was released by the New England Patriots on Thursday The 28-year- old Langham, signed by the Patriots last April 28, had 40 tackles and one interception in 15 games last season. MELTING SNOW DAMAGES PRESS BOX AT IOWA STATE — Melting snow seeped into the press box at Iowa State's Jack Trice Stadium during the winter and spring, causing thousands of dollars in damage. Most of the damage occurred on the tower's first level, which houses nine skybox suites, said Frank Randall, Iowa State's assistant athletic director for operations. The water damaged drywall, insulation, ceiling tiles and carpeting. Murray Blackwelder, Iowa State's vice president for external affaurs, said the damage could total as much as $100,000.
