Sentinel Star, Saturday, September 2t, 1977 5-C Wbrft or 'clean9 investments expands Funds drive head named for diocese UnlUd Prtsi International Dlipttch During the Vietnam War, churches and synagogues, first on the national level, became aware of the responsibility they had to manage their sometimes huge investment portfolios, not only in a fiscally responsible way but in a socially responsible manner as well. Congregants opposed to the war started making noises about the hypocrisy of the denominational stances against the war while pen which to invest. The first of these options, exemplified by the Center for Corporate Responsibility, working out of the National Council of Churches, has by far been the most publicized. The collars of clerical activists now regularly appear at the microphones of stockholders' meetings, rather than under picket signs on the streets, arguing for changes. in a company's environmental practices or South African employment practices.

sion funds and other church monies were routinely being invested in firms with Defense Department contracts and therefore aiding the war effort. TWO STRATEGIES were devised to deal with the problem: to continue to hold stock in the questioned corporations and fight to change their policies, or to sell the stock In companies with policies the churches opposed and look for other non-objectionable firms in Gordon E. Jereczek, 49, has been named director of development for the Catholic Diocese of Orlando. Jereczek will lead the fund-raising operation of the diocese, including the Annual Bishop's Appeal, as well as other programs at the diocesan and parish level. A native of St.

Paul, Jereczek held a similar position with the archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis for the past eight years. Prior to that he was assistant' executive director of the St. Paul United Fund, after being associated with the Ramsey County Probation Department as assistant director of adult probation. He has a bachelor's degree in business administration and a master's degree in Social work from the University of Minnesota.

Obituaries to what degree the company is invested in South Africa. ON THE positive side, the fund looks for investments in such industries as food, health care, housing, pollution control, education and leisure time activities. "Over our six-year history," Corbett said, "we have outperformed the market averages." He said that for the first six months of 1977, the Dow Jones averages have gone down 8.8 per cent while the Pax has risen 3.7 per cent, taking into account an income dividend of 18 cents paid in January. Despite the fund's success, Corbett said "generally we've been a little disappointed" in the number of institutional investors. But he noted that most managers of institutional funds are "properly cautious" in their investment management.

"OUR BIGGEST unsolved problem has been to get listed in the daily newspapers," he said. It takes a thousand shareholders to be listed by the Wall Street Journal and 2,000 for the New York Times. Pax currently has about 700 shareholders. Assets for Pax World Fund now total $1,721,836. OTHERS, HOWEVER, have sought to find alternatives whereby people and institutions could invest in corporations which were ''life supportive" corporations rather than "problem" investments.

Among the most successful of th alternative investment groups has been Pax World Fund, headquartered in Portsmouth, N.H., which just celebrated its sixth birthday. "The most remarkable thing about the fund," said Jack Cor-bett, a United Methodist minister who was a founder and sits on the fund's board of directors, "is that we have discovered it is possible to invest in the life supportive industries and not go into weapons production and we are able to provide a normal return." "PEOPLE SAID that we couldn't do it," he said. The fund, established in 1971, has set up some basic criteria for screening companies in which it invests. Among the primary considerations are that the firm cannot be Involved in weapons production or weapons-related production and that it must have strong fair employment policies and practices. It also looks at the environmental impact of the company and, now, such things as whether and William Presson, 72 2235 Hilltop Court Eustis.
