St Cloud Times 5B Thursday, June 3, 1993 Graf coasts into women's final; Edberg upse No. 1 Sampras falls on clay again one point drew a cheer just for breaking a string of Medvedev points. Krajicek made no secret of bis strategy against Courier. Til leave the baseline play to him," said the 21-year-old Dutchman. Til play my own game, which is serve-and-volley, play short points, attack his second serve, if possible, come in, just play a completely different game than he has been playing against all the other guys." The last serve-and-volley man to win the French Open was Frenchman Yan-nick Noah in 1983.

Krajicek, whose only previous Grand Slam semifinal was on a fast surface at last year's Australian Open, said he wasn't surprised by his strong showing here. "I always had the feeling I could play on clay," he said. "Just because I go to the net more often than other people doesn't mean you're not a clav court player." before Seles began her streak. Medvedev displayed all-round virtuosity, slamming eight service returns for winners, hitting 14 passing shots to only one for the third-seeded Edberg, and neutralizing the Swede's serve-and-volley game with eight offensive lobs that went for winners. "It was a pre-game plan," Medvedev said of the lobs.

"He was getting too close to the net in his previous matches. He's very quick at the net I knew that at the key points I had to make a few lobs." The match started Wednesday evening, and Medvedev won the first set in an astounding 16 minutes, yielding only seven points to Edberg. Rain forced suspension of the match with the second set tied 5-5. "When someone like Stefan wins only seven points it's really my best-ever set," said Medvedev, who is is Ukrainian. Edberg double-faulted once in each of his first four service games, and at French Cpen plagued Huber, the No.

8 seed. In the second match, No. 2 seed Arantxa Sanchez Vicario played fifth-seeded Mary Joe Fernandez. 1 don't think she played up to her best," Graf said of Huber. "It was her first Grand Slam semifinal and she was probably nervous." Grafs victory in the all-German match enabled her to reclaim the world No.

1 ranking for the first time since September 1991, when Monica Seles surpassed her. Seles won the French Open the past three years, but is out of action indefinitely after being stabbed April 30 in Hamburg, Germany, by a factory worker who said he wanted to help Graf become No. 1 again. Graf is now 6-0 against Huber, losing only 20 games in 12 sets. Graf won the title here in 1987 and 1988, and Sanchez Vicario won in 1989 Despite Sampras' higher seeding, the outcome wasn't a shock.

Bruguera beat him in straight sets two weeks ago in the World Team Cup in Germany. "6-3, 6-1. 1 knew going into today's match he was pretty confident and capable of beating me," Sampras said. "But the serve was definitely a big part of the match. For me, anyway.

"I needed to serve a little bit better to win this match. When the big points came around, that was the one shot that let me down. "I beat a couple of decent clay court players this tournament, but Sergi is another class of a really good clay court player." Bruguera's post-match advice to Sampras was to play more on clay. Sampras' 16 career titles include the 1990 U.S. Open, but only one minor clay-court tournament ASSOCIATED PRESS PARIS Pete Sampras vows to be back and do better at the French Open.

"I feel I can win here," Sampras said. "I am going to be here for the next 10 to 15 years. Hopefully, one year I will win it" Not this year. Sergi Bruguera, the No. 10 seed, pushed the world's top-ranked player out of the tournament with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, 64 quarterfinal victory Wednesday.

Sampras served erratically, made 60 unforced errors and came away disappointed at another failure of proving he can play world-class tennis on clay. "You can say all you want, but the bottom line is I am not in this tournament anymore," Sampras said. "You can only say so much about a tennis match. It just wasn't a good day for me." 7 JUST SAY CHARGE ITI three hitter sparks Foley MlajjagWfleMpBBnF' Tjsswr we'M'gsjaajjr No. 11 Medvedev uses lobs to oust No.

3 Edberg ASSOCIATED PRESS PARIS Top-seeded Steffi Graf cruised into the French Open final with a rout of Alike Huber today after Stefan Edberg was outhit and outsmarted by 18-year-old Andrei Medvedev. Playing in only his third Grand Slam, the llth-seeded Medvedev fended off an Edberg comeback attempt with bullet-like service returns and deadly lobs to win the last men's quarterfinal 6-0, 6-7 (7-3), 7-5, 64. He earned a semifinal match Friday with No. 10 seed Sergi Bruguera of Spain. In the other semifinal, No.

Maple Lake 7, Minneapolis Mustangs 4 MAPLE LAKE The Lakers scored three runs in the eighth inning to break a 44 tie and win an exhibition game. Maple Lake's Brad Fobbe singled and the Mustangs then committed four errors to let in the three runs. From Page IB Tech Wednesday's game was necessary because the Tigers and Cardinals split the first two games of the best-of-three championship series Tuesday in Alexandria. The Cardinals' freshman pitcher Shannon Vickerman upset Tech and Christy 2-1 in Tuesday's first game, allowing one unearned run. Tech and Christy evened the series with 7-1 victory over Vickerman in the second game.

The Tigers were intent on not letting themselves be surprised again Wednesday. "We weren't too worried about it," said co-captain Tracey Gohman, who was 2-f or-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored Wednesday. "(Tuesday), we hit really well off her (Vickerman) but the balls were always right at them. Every time we've lost this year, we've come back and gotten some winning streaks going, so we weren't worried about losing that game. We knew we would come back strong." While they were talking nonsense before they went to the plate, the Tigers were no nonsense once in they got there.

They led off their half of the first inning with a walk and four straight hits, and they sent 10 hitters to the plate before Alexandria could end the surge. Tech's Stacy Lindgren then opened the second inning with a home run down the left field line, and Joy Notch tripled and scored on Gohman's single for a 7-0 Tech lead. The Cardinals cut the lead to 7-4 with a run in the fourth and three more in the Medalist Tracy Melby, Alexandria, 82. He went to second on a wild pitch, and to third on a groundout. Barten held third as Dave Stalboerger reached on an infield single. Stalboerger then tried to steal second, drawing a throw.

Bar-ten just beat the throw home from second baseman Mike Beier. Barten, a center fielder, scored all three Spring Hill runs. He finished with a single and a double. Randy Schoenberg pitched the last five innings for Spring Hill. Randy Beier had two hits for Regal.

sixth, thanks to three Tech errors. But essentially, Christy was dominant, just as she has been all this season and last Christy has a 1.27 earned run average this season, and she has built a 24-5 career mark since joining the varsity last season. Tech's poise, hitting and Christy's arm provide hope entering the state tournament, although they will play the victor of Section 6AA, which includes some of the state's better teams. Tech's players lost 2-1 to Eagan in a summer league game last year. Lat-terell said that team is about the same caliber of any state tournament team.

"We know we're not going to be in awe of any of those teams," he said. "We'll be competitive. Five or six years ago, teams from this area would have been outclassed against Twin Cities teams. Not any more." And if talent and skill aren't enough, Tech can always confuse them with talk of bananas and big mallards.
