WWW.THENEWSSTAR.COM THE NEWS-STAR PREPSSCOREBOARD FRIDAY, APRIL 27, 2007 3C G0T0THENEWSSTAR.COM: Click on Preps Beat at thenewsstar.com for extended high school and community sports coverage TODAY'S SPOTLIGHT: OUACHITA LC's Wilson bounces back from injury will advance to the championship round, set for May 4-6 at the site of the top remaining seed from the East Division. A marketing management major, Wilson treasures time alone for mental preparation before a game. Yet, he appreciates, too, the encouragement others have given him over his career especially his father, Ed, a sales manager for a Ruston car dealership. "My dad has been my backbone and support the whole way," he said. "If I was down on myself, he'd always pick me up.

This being my senior year, I want to make him proud." Wilson, being saved for conference competition this weekend, pitched just one inning the sixth in the second game of Tuesday's non-conference dou-bleheader against LSUS. He did not allow a run or a hit, whiffed two batters and walked another who was picked off base for the final out. A 6-foot-3 right-hander, Wilson has two pitches a fastball and a change-up. He was named ASC pitcher of the week in February. Louisiana Gannett News Grant Wilson, his arm healed and his mind more focused, won more games than he did all of last season for the Louisiana College baseball team.

As the team's ace, the senior from Ouachita is 5-4 in 11 starts as his team begins play in the American Southwest Conference Tournament. He finished 4-7 last year. "Last year, I was coming off (arthroscopic) surgery to my (right) elbow," he said recently, "and I never really felt confident pitching at the level I'm normally at. I may have finished only 4-7 last year, but I felt I threw the ball well at times. "Last year," he said, "I drifted off sometimes.

I'm totally focused this year, and I'm more confident than I have ever been." In his third year as a starter after beginning his LC career as a closer, Wilson ranks among the conference leaders in earned run average (3.00), innings pitched (69) and strikeouts (61). LC will open the postseason with a three-game series at McMurry beginning today. Tayshaun Prince scored 23 points, Chauncey Billups added 21 and the Pistons defeated Orlando 93-77 Thursday night to take a 3-0 lead in the first-round playoff series. The victory ended a postseason trend for the Pistons they had lost their last six Game 3s when leading 2-0 and left them one victory from advancing to the second round. Jazz 81, Rockets 67: Carlos Boozer had 22 points and 12 rebounds, and Utah held Houston without a field goal for 10 minutes in the second half to now only trail their playoff series 2-1.

Golden State guard Monta Ellis won the Most Improved Player award Thursday after averaging 16.5 points, 4.1 assists and 3.2 rebounds this season. Ellis edged Sacramento guard Kevin Martin by three points in the closest voting in the award's history, earning 47 first-place votes and 352 points from a media panel. Martin got 44 first-place votes and 349 points. COLLEGE BASKETBALL Ole Miss women's coach to retire Mississippi women's basketball coach Carol Ross will announce her retirement at a news conference scheduled for Thursday afternoon. Assistant coach Renee Ladner will become the new coach, Ole Miss spokesman Langston Rogers said.

Ross, a former Southeastern Conference coach of the year, just had her most successful season in Oxford, guiding the Rebels to the national quarterfinals and a 25-11 record. She was 78-50 in four seasons at Ole Miss and had a career record of 325-171 in 16 seasons. North Texas: Coach Johnny Jones has agreed to a five-year contract extension through 2012 after the school's first trip to the NCAA tournament since 1988. The Mean Green won a school-record 23 games and their first Sun Belt Conference title, which earned an automatic NCAA berth. Jones is 86-89 in six seasons and is third on the school's win list.

GOLF O'Hair takes opening lead at Nelson Sean O'Hair wants to be known for his game, not how he was pushed into the professional ranks while still in high school by an overbearing father. With the way O'Hair is playing these days, his past is becoming less of the story, though it's no less disturbing. The 24-year-old O'Hair shot a season-best 5-under 65 on Thursday in the EDS Byron Nelson Championship to take a one-stroke lead over defending champion Brett Wetterich and Anders Hansen after the tournament's first round without its namesake. O'Hair played the Cottonwood Valley course. Wetterich's 66 included an eagle 3 on the 554-yard 16th hole when he hit his approach within 7 feet of the pin.

His 20-foot birdie attempt for a share of the lead at the closing 440-yard hole at the TPC Four Seasons course slid just left of the cup. Luke Donald, with his ninth consecutive Nelson round in the 60s, and Scott Verplank were among five players tied for fourth at 67. Another dozen players posted 68s. Phil Mickelson opened with a 69. Corona Championship: Lorena Ochoa shot a 5-under 68 in the Mexican star's first round as the No.
