16 Fort Collins Coloradoan Thursday, July 13, 1972 Rich race to be televised Chess financier faces bank problem Legion baseball team plays away tonight Fort Collins' American Legion baseball team, which wound up with a 2-2 record in last weekend's Longmont Invitational Tournament, resumes competition tonight in a 7:30 p.m. game at Littleton. Coach Bill Brown's Fort Collins nine turned back Aurora twice by scores, of 7-6 and 3-2, and. lost to Wheat Ridge, 5-3, and Greeley, 6-5. RUIDOSO, N.M.

(AP) The world's richest horse race the All American Quarter Horse Futurity at Ruidoso Diwns will be carried live by about 60 television stations in IS states, says the network formed specifically to carry the event. Art Johnson, president of Ruidoso Downs, and Thad M. Sandstrom, president of the Ail-American Network, announced this week the first telecast of ter had applied for permission to get the money to the players but declined to say whether bank approval would be forthcoming. Slater, a chess fan, cannot transfer the money from his worldwide banking and investment empire to foreigners or open bank accounts for either Fischer or Spassky in Britain without the bank's the Labor Day race with a purse of $925,000. The network is based in To-peka, Kan.

Stations which have contracted to carry the race at 5:30 p.m. MDT Sept. 4 all are in the Midwest and Southwest, The quarter horse that wins the futurity will receive about $290,000, some three times the winner's purse of the Kentucky Derby, track officials said. The most he can do is pay $720 a year. That'a the maximum gift payment permitted to go to nonsterling areas from Britain.

Slater, 43, put up the money to get Fischer to Reykjavik after he appeared reluctant to play because the $125,000 purse offered by the Icelandic Chess Federation was not enough. The extra prize enticed Fischer to do battle. LONDON (AP) British financier James Slater has been stalled in his efforts to get the $120, 000 prize money he put up for the world chess championship between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky in Iceland. Under Britain's foreign exchange control regulations, he cannot get the money out of the country until the Bank of England says so. A bank spokesman said Sla by earl wi lson In my fishing experiences which are inconsiderable when compared to some anglers I and kept looking at me." THIS IS believeable because you can get very close to fish under water.

know and others I've heard i "Finally I cot the end of the crowbar almost up to its mouth and still the fish hadn moved. Suddenly I lunged forward and ran the end of the bar through the fish's mouth and out his gills. Then I grabbed the end that came out its gills and had him!" To make the proverbial long story short, Diver swam to shore clutching the bass, stopped activities for the day and hurried to his diggings with the V-k 3 KM OVAL EXTENSION TABLE WITH FOUR CHAIRS REG. $375.00 SALE PRICE $29950 ROUND EXTENSION TABLE WITH FOUR CHAIRS REG. $273.50 $00050 fish.

THERE, Diver and his partner the fish on the bathroom scales and chortled with glee when the scales registered a little over five pounds. The lady friend took over then and presumably both partook of fresh baked bass under glass! Like I said, there's always enough cred'tability in a fish tale to make it sound credible. But draw your own conclusions on the basis of what I've passed on to you. I've drawn mine. And if anyone wants to know who Diver is forget it.

That's privileged information! THROUGH THE RANGE-FINDER: A "National Park-lands Passport" designed to provide family (or other) admission to all areas of the National Park System was placed on sale June 28 at a cost of $10 dollars Strange as it seems Colorado doesn't have a State record for rainbow trout but if you want to qualify one it must be 10 pounds and up and have its weight and length verified and submitted to the Game Fish Division for certification. Senator Edward Kennedy, noted for his anti-firearms views, observed recently that the U.S. production record of five billion bullets annually is "dubious and grim" and further stated that "all of those hnllets could not only wipe out about, I've heard some really fabulous tales of derring-do with rod and reel. And oddities too! Like the friend who hookd into a respectable large-mouth only to lose both bass and plug because the knot wasn't tight. But wonder of wonders! About 15 minutes later he hooked the same bass, landed same and retrieved his plug.

I'M NOT GULLIBLE. Out of curiosity I listen to the tales and analyze them but come up with nothing. Perhaps I take a fatalistic attitude and pass them off as being true tales stretched a bit or maybe events happened as stated. At any rate they never bothered me too much. Stay with me because here's another and it's a dandy! I know a young fellow who's a scuba diver.

This fact isn't startling because the hobby has reached noteworthy proportions since the Navy decided that this was one way to go as a new type of underseas warfare. NOT TOO long ago our young friend and his lady friend were diving in about 30 feet of water near Soldiers Dam at Horse-tooth Reservoir. While his girl friend rested on shore our hero continued to dive and here's where the tale really begins. Not being sure of the legality of his activities I'll mention no names. But this is what he told me: "I was swimmin around on the bottom near some huge boulders," Diver related.

"I saw what looked like a huge white worm draped over a great, big boulder and swam over to see what it was." He never did say what the white object was but went into the heart of the tale. "WHILE I was swimming around the boulder I noticed that several more were laying around and a couple had formed a small cave," Diver continued. "I swam over toward the cave and there was a big bass laying there staring at me. "The more I looked at the fish, the more I wanted to catch it but didn't have anything with me but a crow bar." Now don't get ahead of the tale. You can't swing a crow bar or anything else for that matter, under water, fast enough to hit a fish over the head: It's like swinging in slow motion.

"I held the crowbar straight out in front of me and very slowly swam closer and closer to the fish. It just laid there the entire human population of the world, but they coum decimate most of the world's species of wildlife." 1 UPPERITW jfMtftl I lj)fl feg.si84.5o I XllPtlUPL 10950 'I Reg. $102.50 Boston's Petrocelli slates eye surgery OAKLAND (AP) Shortstop Rico Petrocelli of the Boston Red Sox says he will undergo minor eye surgery in two weeks during the Ail-Star break. They found nothing wrong with the eyes themselves, but there is a sty over one eye." LB a ill jT3r 1 SSrr if Take a look at our selections then make your selections.
