A8 TUESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1996 Money THE SALINA JOURNAL V H&R BLOCK Block will try to rebuild troubled CompuServe By The Associated Press KANSAS CITY — H&R Block on Monday extended control over its troubled CompuServe unit, appointing its new chief executive as chairman of the online service provider. Frank L. Salizzoni, interim president Block was named president and CEO of Block, as well as chairman of the subsidiary, CompuServe Corp. Salizzoni, 58, was named interim president of the tax- preparation company in mid- June.-He spent eight years on Block's board and was president and chief operating officer of USAir and USAir Group from 1994 until April 1996. In a statement from Block, Salizzoni said much needs to be done at the financially troubled CompuServe, which Block has been trying to spin off. "Block's board is committed to strengthening CompuServe and improving shareholder value. Then, when the time is right, we will proceed With separating the company," Saliz- zoni said. Salizzoni replaces Henry Frigon, who was appointed in mid-June as CompuServe chairman. Frigon remains on the board. Block announced the spinoff plans in February. The company said its stock was undervalued and investors would be better served by a spinoff. But Block decided in late August to postpone a shareholder vote on completing its spinoff. T STOCK MARKET Bullish run isn't scaring off investors New investors attracted to market's run are proving to be resilient By JOYCE M. ROSENBERG The Associated Press NEW YORK — Wall Street is running with the bulls. The Dow Jones industrial average closed above the 6,000 mark Monday for the first time, rising 40.62 points to close at 6,010.00, less than a year after it cleared the 5,000 barrier and just months after many had thought the wild ride was over. There were whistles of joy from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange and trading slips were tossed into the air as Anne Allen, vice president for operations at the Big Board, rang the closing bell. The performance by the world's best-known stock indicator reflects the resiliency of the stock market and, perhaps more impor- "I'm investing for five to 10 years. I'm not concerned where it is tomorrow." Mark Teplitsky small investor tantly, that of individual investors who have poured billions of dollars into stocks. After reaching what was then a closing high of 5,778.00 on May 22, the Dow fell 10 percent before resuming its advance. That was followed by several sharp drops, including a nearly 115-point slide on July 5 and a 161-point plunge on July 15. Then on July 16, the Dow dropped more than 167 points, to a six-month low of §,182.31, before rebounding to a gain of just over nine. With the Dow now above 6,000, some analysts warned Monday the NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE 6-year-old bull market might finally be over. A fear voiced by many was that many individual investors were naive, that they didn't understand there are no guarantees the market will continue to advance. The fact that it's taken less than a year for the Dow to go from 5,000 to 6,000 — the previous milestone was reached Nov. 21, 1995, when the Dow closed at 5,023.55 — has lulled new investors into a false sense of security, said the analysts, who warned individuals might yank their money out of the market. "Clearly the individual investor became nervous" in July, said Norman Fosback, editor of stock market newsletters including The Harm ACE Ltd ADT AMR AT&Ti Aamess AbtLab Acuson AMD Aetna Inc Ahmans AirPrad Alrofls s AlrTouch AirTch pIB AlskAIr Albertin Alcatel AlcoSt s Allegnc n AllenGp AlnEnt Aldsignl Allstate AlpineGr Alcoa Alza AmHes AmerOn s AmWest ABrand AEP AmExp AGenCp AHome s AmlntQ AmMdRs AmStores Ameritch Amoco AMP Amphnl Amre Analogs Anheus s Apache ApplMg Apria Aracmz ArchDan ArdsnRIt n ArmWI Ashland AscFCap n AURich Augat AutoDt s AutoZone Aztar BakrHu BancOne BkNYs BankAm BankTr Bametts BarnckG Baxter BayNtwk s BectDks Bell&Hwl BellAtl BellSo BeloAH BenefCp BerkHa A BerkH B n BeslBuy BelhStl BIckHR Boeing BolseC BordCh BoslSc Bowatr BrMySq BritPt BwnSh BrwnFr BurtNSF BrIRsc CMS Eng CPC CUC Intl CWMMt Cabletm Cadence s CallGoll CampSp CdnPc g CardnHIt CaroPw CaseCp Cateip CenSoWst ChmpEs ChaseM ChkPt s Chevron Chryslr s CINergy CircCty Citicorp ClalrStr s CocaCIs CocaCE Colemn i ColgPal Coltec ColHCA CmpUSA s Compaq CmpAscs CompScI CmpTsk Cmptvsn ConAgr Coniall Conseco s Dlv. I'm not concerned where ijt is tomorrow," Mark Teplitsky of Westborough, Mass., said Monday as he waited for a tour of the Neva York Stock Exchange. The net cash flow into stock mutual funds — the favored invest^ ment of many individuals — fell in July to $5.8 billion after an average of more than $20 billion a month from January through June, ac-. cording to the Investment Compa' ny Institute, a mutual fund trade group.
