PORT XHORTS By PAUL ERNST HARRIERS OPEN SEASON Columbus High and Scotus cross country runners begin start of new season with a dual at the Camp Luther grounds northeast of Richlond. Person Girl 12th Columbus runners looked impressive over the 2.5-mile course. (Telegram Photo by Becky Moore) Columbus High looks tough offer opening dual victory Good Reports I have heard a number of com- plimentary remarks about the Pawnee Park football field. The folks liked what they saw top lighting and a beautiful field 'of grass. As I've said many times many of our local residents don't appreciate the out- standing park and facilities we have here.

There are very few cities the size of Columbus or larger that can come up with a park like Pawnee Park. TCU Opener TCU, opening home foe of the Buskers, starts the campaign Saturday against SMU at Dallas. TCU visits Lincoln on Sept. 25. Last year the Horned Frogs were 1-10 but this year the picture isn't so gloomy with 5 offensive 7 defensive starters returning.

Reminder Here's a reminder about the opening I NCAA game UCLA-Arizona I State starting 7 p.m. Thursday. And that means it'll be very warm as the game is being played at Arizona I State. The Sun Devils will be favored by a touchdown. Tigers On Prowl LSU I fans are looking forward to the Huskers invading Baton Rouge.

They believe the Tigers have a good chance at upsetting the No. 1 rated Huskers. Here are a few reasons: Nebraska has never played in Tiger Stadium on a Saturday Nebraska beat LSU only by three points last year: LSU always gets up for the big ones and the Huskers arc No. 1 l-SU returns a number of top statistical leaders in every category from last year's team. ByRICHGAVER Cross country Coach Ron Callan called his 1976 Columbus High team "best overall group of runners ever in my eight years cross country," prior to the first dual, and on Tuesday his young squad lived up to his expectations by posting some excellent times over a rugged 2.5-rnile course at Camp Luther.

Sophomore Ron Stachura led the Discoverers with a strong 15:18 clocking won the dual over Scotus' most inexperienced and youngest squad ever by a 16-46 count. The Shamrocks' Frank Spenccri said their goal was just to finish the race and the veteran mentor was pleased as eight of the 10.who started crossed the finish line. Tuesday's first dual featured the first girl ever to run in cross country for a Columbus High team as sophomore Bobbie Person finished the race in 12th with a clocking of 19:03. Callan said, "Bobbie has excellent ability and has great courage of running the long boy's distance." Scotus returns only two lettermen in senior John Kosiba and junior Rich Jochum out of a squad of 12 that is the largest turnout ever at Scotus. Jochum took fifth to lead his mates with a time of 16:36, while Kosiba was eighth at 17:13, followed by sophomore Kevin Eutenauer, 9th, Senior Steve Heimann, llth, sophomore Jim McMeekin, 13, fresh- man Mike Jahn, 14, sophomore, Mark Voborii, Additional members of the A IV EXPLANATION saint! Coach Callan was enthused with his club's first showing and commented, "it was an excellent job.

They were all 19 seconds better despite the 95- degree heat and strong winds." He continued, "we will need to run better Friday against York since they have won the last four outings." Columbus will host York at Camp Luther on Friday, Sept. 10 at 4:15 p.m. Trailing Stachura's course record was Columbus' lone senior runner Terry Anderson in 15:48, while junior Doug Brunkhorst was third in 16:20 and sophomore Marv Sawtell took fourth with the samp Another sophomore, Keith Groteluschen, was sixth in 17 minutes flat, white junior Dave Morse finished 7th in 17:05. "If all pull together and help each other they can be great. We want to prove outselves on the course." Callan's previous club was 3-3-1 in duals and the team will be trying to improve on finishes of 5th in Apollo and 6th in Big 10. (UPI) The Nebraska football team worked out for two hours Tueday night under the lights at Seacrest Field in preparation for its opener against Louisiana State University Saturday night. Coach Tom Osborne said the team concentrated on its kicking and passing' game.

Following the practice, Os- borne said he expects to see LSU use a lot of different things in their offense, "LSU has a new offensive coordinator and we can ex- pect a lot of formations. It could be really open with them throwing the ball a lot," he said. Osborne said LSU quarter- back Pat Lyons is a good passing quarterback, and a player Nebraska tried to recruit. University of Nebraska volleyball coach Pat Sullivan made her final player cut and announced the names of the women who represent the University of Nebraska volleyball team for the 1976-77 season. At the same time, Sullivan also released a beefed up 1976-77 schedule.

Sullivan, who coached last year's team to an un- precedented 37-8 record and an invite to the AIAW National Championships in' Princeton, New Jersey, feels she has an even better squad this year than she had last year. "I am really excited about the talents of tfiis group," said Sullivan, "although some of the players need to work on various skills, they basically look very strong." Sullivan also said she was looking forward' to this season's new highly com- petitive schedule. "This is what Nebraska teams have been waiting for," bubbled an enthusiastic i a "competition against teams like UCLA can't help but improve our program. It's a rough schedule, but it is one that will provide our women with the kind of competition they need." The Lady Huskers will begin their schedule on September 18th when the varsity and junior varsity teams play Drake University and UNO in the University of Nebraska Coliseum. Game time 10:30 a.m.
