ifVi Page 12 Friday, November 13.1981 MONDAY SCOUTING REPORTS MONDAY SCOUTING REPORT San Diego at Seattle It started In 1977. Dan Fouts had missed ttte first 10 games of ttie season because of a contract squabble. He came in and completed 19 of 26 passes And beat ttie Seattte Seahawl(S. The bearded Chargers' quarterback has cdmpiled amazing statistics in years since, but none so amazing as against the Seahawks. In eight games, he has hit 70.4 percent of his passes, for 2,173 yards, 18 touchddwns and only six interceptions.

Seattle never hes beaten Dan Fouts and ttw San Diego Chargers. But then, Fouts and the Chargers rarely have seemed so vulnerable as they do now, heading a Monday night date in Seattle's Kingdome. The Chargers have lost two of their last three, one to the Bears, 20-17 in overtime, and the other to ttw Bengals, 40-17, last week. MOO.OO" REWARD Ik OiL CITY JO EST 2Q EST 1. BEST GASMPG 2.

That game featured Seattle luck which had been missing from the Kingdome since consecutive 9-7 seasons In 1978 and 1979. Pittsburgh kicker David Trout missed a 22-yard field goal attempt with 19 seconds remaining. When Seattle played In San Diego Oct. 4, Fouts threw for three touchdowns and 302 yards in a 24-10 victory. With his team at 64 and apparently slumping and with Seattle at 3-7 and slightly surging, can he do it again? WHEN SAN DIEGO HAS THE BALL Fouts prefers the deep pass but will take what he can get.

When Seattle played to stop the bomb In San Diego, Fouts completed no passes longer than 15 yards, but he completed a team-record 30 of them. Chuck Muncle and James Brooks were injured then. Seattle can expect to see both runners In the backfleld at once this time. The Chargers have been disguising the preferred one back set, by lining up Brooks and Muncie in an I formation and then sending one In motion. Former Saints' receiver Wes Chandler has fit nicely Into the San Diego attack, kpeping the coverage honest against Kellen WInslow (48 catches) and Charlie Joiner (43).

The Chargers lead the NFL in yards gained mainly because of Foots' lead-leading pass production. Seattle is respectable against the pass but soft against the run. THE ttie three games since the reinstallment of John Yarno dt center and Dan Doornink at fullback, and the arrival of tailback Theotis Brown from St. Louis, the Seahawks have running better and that has helped both the passing attack and the formerly overworked defense. Lack of rushing power hurt the Seahawks in San Diego when they had two drives die inside the Charger two yard line.

Quarterback Jim Zorn is sometimes erratic, but dangerous as a scrambler with a strong arm. He prefers short passes to set up long ones to Steve Largent, but against the Chargers, Zorn may look downfield first. San Diego was ranked 27th in pass defense before the Cincinnati game and let the Bengals throw for 337 yards. Largent has 49 catches for 735 yards and seems to get better each week. KEY MATCHUPS: SAN DIEGO WIDE RECEIVER WES CHANDLER VS.

SAFETY KtNNY EASLEY Chandler is a speedster com ing off his best game as a Charger, 10 cat ches for 194 yards and two touchdowns. Easley Is impressive rookie who is always around the ball but he's yet td intercept a pass. SAN DIEGO RIGHT OFFENSIVE TACKLE RUSS WASHINGTON VS. LEFT DEFENSIVE END JACOB GREEN Washington and his huge llnemates allowed the Seahawks to sack Fouts four times In the first nneeting. Green is Seattle's quickest pass rusher and has eight sacks.

SAN DIEGO RIGHT OFFENSIVE GUARD ED WHITE VS. DEFENSIVE LEFT TACKLE MIKE WHITE Ed White tias been Impenetrable in ttie past but Mike White, a 6-5, 275-pounder cut by the Bengals, could give him trouble. Starting In place of Injured Robert Hardy against the Steelers, Mike had 11 tackles and one sack. SAN DIEGO TIGHT END KELLEN WINSLOW VS. WInslow is the most versatile tight end in football, playing slot back, wlngback, wide receiver and more.

Seattle tried to stop him last time by putting 202-pound rookie Greg Gaines at middle linebacker and had him concentrate on WInslow. The scheme had some success but Gaines is now on Injured reserve. SEATLE FULLBACK DAN DOORNINK VS. SAN DIEGO MIDDLE LINEBACKER BOB HORN Doornink caught three touchdown passes in the last two games, and broke two short passes for long gains against the Steelers. Horn Is starting only liecauseXnffTfirTft weak on pass coverage.

SEATTLE RUNNING BACK THEOTIS BROWN VS. OUTSIDE LINEBACKERS LINDEN KING AND WOOOROW LOWE The Seahawks sprint draw is alive and well with Brown running the ball. King and Lowe will have to contain him and pursue when he bounces the other way. SEATTLE RIGHT OFFENSIVE GUARD EDWIN BAILEY VS. DEFENSIVE LEFT TACKLE GARY JOHNSON Bailey is a surprising rookie who already may be his team's best drive blocker.

Johnson is an all-pro who generally demands double teaming and always pesters Seattle. SEATTLE QUARTERBACK JIM ZORN VS. SAN OIEGO SECONDARY Zorn was erratic two weeks ago but came back against the Steelers. The Chargers thought ttieir secondary was saved when safety Glen Edwards returned two weeks ago, but Cincinnati's passing proved them wrong. LAST-MINUTE FACTORS The Seahawks usually are at their tricky best for Monday night football and have won two out of three using tritks by their special teams.

Last week against Pittsburgh, field-goal kicker Efren Herrera lined up as a lone back and Zorn threw a pass to tackle Steve Rogers. Punter Jeff later ran 27 yards for a first down. Rogers, who won the Heisman Trophy at South Carolina, was the first pick in the '81 draft. Going Into week eleven, George ranked third among rushers in the NFL, trailing only Tony Dorsettand Earl Campbell.

His five 100-yard games put him within reach of the NFL rookie record of nine by the Cardinals' Ottis Anderson in 1979. Other NFC No. One picks in starting roles Include: cornerback Bobby Butter of Atlanta; tackle Keith van Horne of Chicago; linebacker Lawrence Taylor of the Giants; linebacker E.J. Junior of St. Louis; cornerback Ronnie Lott of 49ers and linebacker Hugh Green of Tampa Bay.

Over in the AFC, two rookies star In major roles tor the revitalized Kansas City Chiefs. Running back Joe Delaney, a second round draft choice from Northwest Louisiana, ranks among the leaders in rushing in the AFC and, as of this writing, had reached the 100-yard mark in four games. Chiefs' safety Lloyd Burruss, a third round pick from Maryland, has three interceptions and is giving opposing quarterbacks second thoughts. Kansas City coach Marv Levy remembers when tw recruited Denver quarterback Craig Morton to play for him at the University of California 20 years ago. "Craig was the most highly sought after player I recruited," says Levy.

"I think only Shippensburg and Ossloa weren't Interested in him. He was the best high school quarterback I've ever seen. He also was a great baseball player and baskettiall player." The 38-year-old Morton has enjoyed a successful 16-yefar career since playing for Levy at California. Only 10 quarterbacks In the history of the NFL have completed more passes than Morton and only 13 others have thrown for more yards..
