2 34 40 Nick DeLouisa, Immaculata 4 19 31 Julian Frazier, North Plaintield 0 26 26 Tyler Sanchez, Somerville 2 18 24 By HARRY FREZZA Staff Writer With many of its players re-' turning from a successful 2007 season, the Bound Brook High School football team was expected to be pretty good. Going out and actually doing it was another thing. Kevin Carty Jr. did everything in his power to make sure it happened. The Crusaders fin- aiiu wuu the Sky- Carty land Con- Valley Division title their first title since 1978.

Bound Brook made the Central Group I playoffs for the third straight year. The 10 wins was a single-season school record. Carty, 31, who quarter-backed Somerville to a Central Up) Group II title in 1994, is the Courier News Football Coach of the Year. The Crusaders had plenty of players who contributed to an 8-2 season in 2006 and a 7-3 season in 2007 back, but they lost playmakers in Erron Banks, Devon Baker and Chris Jeskie. "We lost three of our best kids," said Carty, a graduate of the College of William and Mary.

"We lost a lot of production with those guys." The team had better balance, Carty said. The defensive line of seniors Gregg Pulsinelli, Nick Xumphonphakdy, Emmanuel Palomino and John Schie-ferstein and versaitle senior defensive back Joe Caban played important roles in the playoff win over Florence, its first postseason win since 1978. "I think I reminded our kids of what they already knew," Carty said. "We had to get better physically. We had to improve our run defense.

The kids had a great offseason, and it paid off." Bound Brook had a proven quarterback in senior Mike Ro manella, a standout receiver in senior Jordan Hawkins, senior fullback Andrew LaFleur and state wrestling champ Andrew Campolattano, a sophomore running back just getting to really learn the game. Both LaFleur and Campolattano also were linebackers. "The two Andrews, Mike and Jordan did the very most with every touch they got," Carty said. Romanella transferred to Bound Brook before his junior year. His father, Sam, had coached Carty when Carty played for the Mohegan (now Manchester) Wolves in the Arena Football League 2.

"Besides my father, Kevin is the most influential person I've met," said Romanella, who threw for 2,100 yards and 23 touchdowns. "He's always been there for me, and that's something no other coach has done. "Whenever we were down, he was always trying to get us going, rally us back. We always looked to him, and he was always ready."
