Rooster Settles Suit KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — The white rooster was held on a block of wood. With a single swing, A. Appukuttan lopped off its head with a butcher' knife. The fowl thrashed for a little while and then lay still. Appukuttan, an Indian rubber tapper of 41, shook hands with a Chinese, 59. Their dispute over a loan was settled. The ceremony was held at a Chinese temple in Malacca, after a five-minute prayer by a priest. It was witnessed by two lawyers and two court inter preters. Suit Over $300 Loan The loan of about $300 was the subject of a civil suit. In a magistrate 's court both parties agreed to settle the dispute with the chopping off of a rooster 's head. Hundreds of court cases have been settled in Malaysia by this method. Malaysians, especially those of Chinese origin, believe evil will befall the one who has lied in a challenge of this sort In Appukuttan's case, he cleared his name by accepting the challenge. Since he whacked the rooster, he was assumed Innocent. If he was actually guilty, It was believed, the rooster 's curse would be apparent. The Chinese merchant also was cleared since he would not have offered the challenge unless Innocent. Sometimes, Just to strengthen the .verdict, each party must dispatch a rooster. It doesn't establish much proof, but it settles arguments. Form of Oath Chopping the rooster 's head Is a Chinese form of oath. Some experts believe it dates to the Chou Dynasty around 1100 B.C. Some Chinese secret societies apparently use this method of admitting members. The thought is that if any member betrayed his brethren, evil would befall him and he would meet a fate similar to the rooster. Many stories are told in Ma laysia of people who tried to cheat by chopping the rooster's head and have suffered as a result. A former municipal commls sioner tells of one housewife who claimed $1,000 from a man to whom she had given only $300. During the chopping cere mony, the story goes, blood from the rooster splashed into her eyes and she became blind Lee Siow Mong, manager of the government-run Employes' Provident Fund, says a white rooster is chosen because the color signifies purity and Chi nese believe that in the feathered world only the white rooster possesses a soul. Lee dismisses the whole idea as superstition. He thinks it is better for the two parties just to take oath at a temple. Chinese priests favor ihis too. But Were Afraid To Ask, to find out he hadn't answered all the questions on that subject after all. When his book, which became a best-seller, was published, he was flooded with letters—more questions. So, now he has written 364 more pages of answers. They're In a book, "Any Woman Can!" and they deal with problems like: How do I get a man to marry me? Are there any fulfilling ternatives to marriage? How do I meet eligible men? How do I decide which men are right for me? "It's written from the point of view of a psychiatrist and his patients," Reuben says. "I don't think the book is cut and dried, or has any big revela tions, but I do think it brings things into clear focus." And the main focus, he adds, Is the plight of the "sexually marooned woman." Reuben contends that our whole culture says a woman has to have a marriage license to express herself sexually. "Any woman who tries to overcome that obstacle and express her supposedly new freedom is likely to find herself being exploited. Yes, women should be free and equal, but just saying It doesn 't make It so." i Now At Jack & Jill PUMPKINS » Fancy lied or Golden Delicious 4c Off Label, Soft Spread Imperial MARGARINE Gooch Elbo MACARONI 3 White or Assorted Facial Tissue KLEENEX 4 Kleenex PAPER TOWELS 3 16 oz.
