(Orluitfld grntlnrl Thursday, July 13, 1972 Fischer Loses hi Game I Of Chess Championship Spassky Team Finds Fischer Flaw 13 A SO THE score now stands: Spass-ky, 1, Fischer, 0. and the favorite has met with an unexpected defeat. Nevertheless, this is what happened to him last year In his final match in the candidates series against Petro-biun at Buenos Aires, and he still won that match easily. Will he recover his nerve In today's game when he has the white pieces: I have the feeling that Fischer. Is very much like the wounded lion who Is never so dangerous as when he Is first wounded.

We shall see. One thing Is certain, the match Is very much alive. Miami Gnlombek, international chest qrandmasle.r, has been thrett time British chest champion and a judye in nix previous world chess championship matches, lit in the.sn correspondent or the Times of London. WORLD CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP By HARRY COLOMIJEK WtthlMtM DltMtca REYKJAVIK Although when pluy was adjourned Tuesday night after 40 moves the result seemed unclear and champion Boris Spa silky's winning possibilities uncertain, an overnight analysis by his assistant trio of grandmasters Efjim Geller, Nikolai Krogius and Ne -showed that challenger Bobby Fischer's position was not really tenable In the first game of the world chess championship. The first few moves of the play off went much as anticipated, but then Fischer's defense became more and more difficult.

With a few short sharp strokes Spassky beat back his opponent's king. THEN CAME a dramatic suspension of play. Fischer observed that a WORLD CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP flSCHtl By LARRY EVANS REYKJAVIK, Iceland Hobby FIh-eher lost tha first game of his championship match with Doris Spassky here Wednesday and probably lost a few of his fans as well. Shortly after the resumption of the previous days adjourned game, Fischer got up from the board and rushed out tr compluln about the noise from the TV camera situated upstairs. "I wunt them out of here" he shouted.

Fischer's emotional outburst was somewhat understandable since he probably knew at the time that he was headed for defeat. WHEN DEFEAT did come, Fischer, smiling, stood up, shook hands with Spassky and strode off the stage, ending a drama that had begun Tuesday evening. Fischer threatened early today to stay away from the second game unless all television cameras were removed from the auditorium, international chess sources said. Fischer made his demand known at a closed-door meeting with representatives of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), the Icelandic organizers of the $250,000 match and American companies owning the rights to televise the games. CHESS SOURCES SAID Fischer would forfeit the second game of the 24-game series If he failed to appear within one hour of the 3 p.m.

1 p.m. EDT starting time Thursday. Two cameras placed In towers out In the hall had been taken away at Fischer's request. before the first game began Tuesday evening. Spassky, as expected, opened with P-Q4 and Fischer adopted a Nimzo-i Indian defense.

Both players avoided any risk and made a series of wholesale exchanges leading to a simple endgame. The food caterer was horrified at the prospect of a quick draw because he had prepared 300 chicken dinners. ON MOVE 29 the game took an Incredible turn. After only five minutes of thought Fischer snatched a "poisoned pawn" with his Bishop. The audience let out an audible gasp.

Fischer's Bishop got trapped behind enemy lines and he had to sacrifice It for a small compensation of only two pawns. Just before adjournment Fischer missed the best drawing chance. He was still fighting desperately to save the game when Spassky sealed move 41, but black's position was hopeless. Before resuming the play, Fischer's representatives submitted an official protest to the referee demanding that the lighting level be Increased, that the front spectator seats (already more than 50 feet away from the players) be pushed further back, and cameraman was training a camera on him from the roof. He protested and said he would not resume play until the camera was removed.

For 32 minutes the game stood In abeyance, and In the Interim, Fischer's clock was going. However, he had plenty of time. Fred Kramer, vice-president of the American Zone of the World Chess Federation, called In the police and the cameraman was ordered away. When play was resumed, Fischer's position went downhill rapidly until he reached a point, where he was unable to move without material loss. Desperately he shifted his king over to the other wing and did indeed succeed In removing one of the world champion's pawns.

Meanwhile, Spassky's king was busily engaged in capturing Fischer's pawns. Fischer resigned on the 5(ith move when it was apparent that he secure a fresh queen.
