Wednesday, June 23, 1976 Columbus, Nebraska Columbus Telegram--13 TELEVISION IN REVIEW For NBC affifiafes expanded network news is bod news By JOAN HANAUER UPI Television-Writer NEW YORK (UPI) The three networks and their Affiliates are having a family fight over the length of the network' evening news, with all three networks now on the record as favoring expanded programs, and the affiliate stations responding with a resounding, "No!" Which probably just means it will take longer. And cost the networks more.

Bill Sheehan, president, ABC News, and Arthur R. Taylor, president, CBS, both previously had made references to the desirability of expanded network news, and affiliate response at best was stony. Richard C. Wald, president, NBC News, made it unanimous Tuesday in an address to the NBC affiliates convention, in which he said: "We expect an expansion of the nightly news programs on the networks is going to occur, somehow, sometime. There is growing recognition all around us of the need and value of such an He also said NBC recognized "that any such expansion raises a lot of complications." Stations with half-hour local news programs would find 45 minutes more palatable, because they could just add 15 minutes to their local news for a 90 minute news show. Stations such as WPAI- Birmingham or WRGB Sche- nectady, which now run an hour's local news, would be faced with a choice of presenting tivohours of news (considered competitive suicide and "incredibly boring," according to one station executive), or they would be forced to cut back on local news. One station representative said that, in turn, could cause problems rath the FCC.

Some stations are on record as promising to present an hour's local news. To schedule news before 5 or 5:30 p.m., local time, means losing the adults still on their way home from work. One suggestion was made by several broadcasters: If the networks want to expand their news broadcasts, why don't they do it on network time?
