Kassel scored the al lifts Somerville Opponents aim away from last season's Big East Special Teams Player of the Year.

By KEITH SARGEANT Gannett New Jersey PISCATAWAY The punt sailed high in the air, just far enough for' Willie Foster to circle under and get a read on it. He caught the punt and avoided two defenders before finding the right wedge to run through, cutting swiftly toward the sideline and racing up the field for a touchdown. If only it happened in a game. The fact that the punt sailed off the foot of Joe Radigan and came during practice last week was hardly consolation for the reigning Big East Special Teams Player of the Year. In fact, Foster is as surprised and frustrated as anyone that he hasn't scored at least once on special teams through the first five games.

Perhaps a kick return like the school-record 93-yarder he had last season against Villanova, Or maybe a punt return reminiscent of the 71 -yard jaunt he had two weeks later against Pittsburgh. Neither has happened so far, yet Foster believes he knows the reason why. "A lot of times teams are kicking it away from me," said Foster, admitting last season's Big East accolade has put a target squarely on his chest. "The way the kicks are going to me, it makes it harder for the guys on our coverage team to set up a block." That was most evident against South Florida last week, when Bulls punter Justin Teachey kicked four punts his way and none were returnable. Opposing teams have punted 22 times this season, and Foster has only been able to get his hands on five of them.

Clearly, Foster has become a player teams want to avoid. "South Florida kicked it away from me," the 5-foot-10, 175-pound senior from Miami said. "Other times teams have done these roll punts, kicking in the other direction just to avoid me. It is (frustrating), but it's a long season." Foster's statistics are respectable, with his 10.8 punt-return average ranking as the third best in the Big East. But his longest punt return was a 28-yarder against Howard two weeks ago, and highlight-reel plays such as his three special-teams touchdowns last season have been nonexistent.

While Foster loves having Radigan as a teammate, there is a part of him that wishes the Big East's leading statistical punter played for the other team, too. "If there was a punter like Joe Radigan kicking for the other team," he said, "I'd guarantee you I'd have one (touchdown) by now." Induction ceremonies Wide receiver Chris Brantley (1990-93) and kicker Alex Fal-cinelli (1980-82) will be inducted into the Rutgers Football Hall of Fame during a halftime ceremony when the Scarlet Knights play host to Connecticut on Oct. 29. Brantley, from Teaneck, caught 144 passes for 1,914 yards (13.3 per catch) and scored 17 touchdowns during his career. He was an All-Big East selection as a senior, when he caught 56 passes for 589 yards and seven touchdowns.

Following his senior season, he was selected in the 1994 NFL draft by the Los Angeles Rams and later played for the Buffalo Bills. Brantley will long be remembered for his outstanding performance in the Scarlet Knights' memorable 50-49 win over Virginia Tech in the 1992 Homecoming game. The sure-handed receiver hauled in eight passes for 124 yards and four touchdown passes, none morejmportant than the 15-yard toss from quarterback Bryan Fortay deep in the right end zone as time ran out, giving Rutgers the come-from-behind victory. Falcinelli, a Belvidere native, led the Scarlet Knights in scoring for three consecutive seasons. Falcinelli boomed three 51-yard field goals and a 50-yarder, as a senior in 1982.

Falcinelli earned All-East honors that season, hitting 12-of-15 field goals and adding 16 extra points. Falcinelli finished with 168 points in three seasons, and his 38 field goals rates third in school history. Falcinelli converted 38-of-49 field goals, a .776 percentage that ranks best in Rutgers history.
