Just like last October's race at Talladega Superspeedway and the disastrous Daytona 500 in February — which included a terrifying 19-car crash and another accident in which NASCAR superstar Dale Earnhardt was killed — this race featured nearly constant two- and three-wide racing by most of the 43-car field. Nobody was able to dominate, although Sterling Marlin, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Tony Stewart did take turns leading the race for extended periods. In the end, though, it was Hamilton's No. 55 Chevrolet, at the front of a long line of cars on the high side of the 2.66-mile oval, that chased down Stewart's Pontiac two laps from the end of the 188-lap event. It was the first NASCAR race without a caution period in nearly two years and the third- fastest 500-mile race in NASCAR history, with Hamilton averaging 184.003 mph. EARNHARDT STILL A PROMINENT PRESENCE AT TALLADEGA — Brandee Dodd drove her Chevrolet Monte Carlo — a la Dale Earnhardt — to Talladega Superspeedway She walked to her seat brandishing a big Dale Jr. banner, honoring her new favorite driver "All you have to say is he's the man," Dodd said of Dale Sr. "We all miss him." The elder Earnhardt wasn't at the track he once dominated for Sunday's Talladega 500, but his presence was everywhere. From the cars painted with "We mi^s you Dale" to the thousands of fans wearing Earnhardt T-shirts and holding up three fingers on the third lap in honor of old No. 3. LEWIS GAMBLE FAILS AS AMERICAN TAKE WORLD TITLES — Lennox Lewis thought he could jet to Africa, make some history, and leave with both his heavyweight titles and a future megafight with Mike Tyson intact. He lost it all on a stunning right hand by Hasim Rahman that turned the heavyweight division upside down and put an abrupt end to growing talk that Lewis might rank among the greatest heavyweight champions ever. PAK WINS FOR SECOND TIME; SORENSTAM STREAK STOPS AT FOUR — Se Ri Pak never needed to worry about Annika Sorenstam on Sunday in the Longs Drugs Classic, shooting an uneventful 1-under 71 to keep one streak alive and stop another. While Sorenstam faded early, Pak used two late birdies to hold off non-winner Laura Diaz by two shots and win her second tournament of the year. Micheie Redman finished another shot back. It was the first time in five tournaments that Sorenstam was not holding the winner's check. A second streak continued, though, with Pak's win leaving Americans 0-10 this year on the LPGA Tour. Sorenstam, trying to win for the fifth straight time to tie a record set 23 years ago by Nancy Lopez, began the day eight shots back and shot a 75 to finish 12 shots behind. SUTTON RALLIES FOR FIRST VICTORY OF YEAR — Hal Sutton shot a 3-under-par 69 in windy conditions Sunday for a three-stroke victory over Joe Durant and Lee Janzen in the Houston Open. Sutton started the final round two strokes behind Durant, who was trying to join Tiger Woods as the only three-time winners on the PGA Tour this year. Sutton, who earned $612,000 for his 14th PGA Tour victory, finished with a 10-under 278 total. Janzen shot a 73, and Durant had a 74. John Cook (69) and Justin Leonard (69) were another stroke back at 282. LUKAS' DERBY STREAK APPARENTLY AT AN END — Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas' record streak of Kentucky Derby starters apparently wiU end this year Lukas has saddled a horse in the Derby for 20 consecutive years, starting with Partez in 1981. But his best chance this year, Turnberry Isle, finished sixth in Saturday's Lexington Stakes. Lukas previously admitted he has entered horses in the Kentucky Derby that probably didn't deserve to be in the field. He said Sunday he won't enter a horse this year just to keep his streak alive.
