DOUG SANDERS continued the hot streak he started by winning the Kemper Open Sunday. Sanders led the field of 57 pros and five amateurs with a 68-67 135. There were few other surprises among the 30 golfers who qualified for the Open at Pebble Beach, June 15-18. Non-qualifiers included Lionel Hebert, Bruce Fleisher, Herb Hooper, and Phil Rodgers who shot 72 in the morning, then quit in disgust on the 14th hole after a string of bogies in the afternoon round. SNEAD CALLED his second round "the worst I've ever played." He carded five bogies and a birdie en route to an outgoing 40.

Phillips 66 is the sponsor of this national contest built along the same lines as pro football's "Punt, Pass Kick" competition. The new coach of the Atlanta Hawks, Cotton Fitzsimmons, is said to be one of the best in the business at skillfully handling integrated squads.

And he must do it with the "kid glove" approach. Because Cotton is about the size of Buz Rosenberg and, at that height, it would be difficult to scare seven -footers, right? (AP) 4th Annual All-Southern Track Coming This Sunday Gator Baseballers Bring Pressure On Dave Fuller THE GOOD-NATURED WHISKEY IX ait "The situation is serious," said another spokesman, adding that the players' stated goal is "to preserve the baseball program at Florida." In their statement, the athletes listed 25-30 qualifications they felt a coach should have. Included were these three: 1) There should be a feeling of trust between coach and player; 2) The coach should make the game enjoyable; 3) There should be communication between coach and players. In rebuttal, Fuller said from Gainesville he was unaware there were team problems.

"Certainly no one talked to me Ai, 1 .41 4tfew IT MIXES WELL We take the time to gentle the taste, to make our whiskey Imperial 3 I a sip smoother than the rest, That's why Imperial is so about them," he said. "No one came to me and yet they say there is a communications gap. How can you communicate when no one will bring the subject up?" He went on: "Nothing like this has ever happened to me in 25 years of coaching. I'm very disappointed." Asked about plans for retirement or resignation, Fuller said: "I'm 57 and can retire at 65. Mandatory retirement isn't until 70.

And as long as my health continues to be good, I plan on staying around until I'm 70." THERE HAD been earlier reports that dissension existed on the team, but the player spokesman said that the only dissension was between coach and players, not among the players. Among the 10 not signing the statement was Fuller's son, who plays on the team. At the recent testimonial dinner held in Fuller's honor, old Gator diamond stars displayed their esteem for their coach by paying off the mortgage on his home. Jimmy Kyncs of Tampa personally tore up the note on the podium as dozens of former UF athletes applauded. Fuller is a native of Wake Forest, N.C, and attended Wake Forest University where he participated in football, basketball and baseball.

He joined the Gators after World War II and has served on the football staff as well as head baseball coach. Last fall, under Doug Dickey, Fuller was in charge of the "scout" or B-team. By GREG BOECK Sentinel Staff Two weeks ago veteran University of Florida Baseball Coach Dave Fuller was honored by former players at a testimonial dinner. Fuller, who in 25 years at the school has won 504 games, described the ocr casion as the "highlight of my life." Monday, 24 of the 34 players on his 1972 team signed a statement which they presented to Athletic Director Ray Graves in Gainesville i i i in the Gator baseball program and calling for improved leadership. Fuller described it as "the most disappointing thing that has ever happened to me." Specifically, the group, led by first baseman John Sutton, a nephew of New York Yankee Manager Ralph Houk, applied indirect pressure on Fuller, although not demanding his resignation.

GRAVES accepted the statement and said he would look into the situation and come to a decision. "The players came in the right spirit," said Graves. "They're interested in Improving the program. I don't think this is anything serious we can't work out. I'll give it my personal attention." The players who signed the statement contend that Fuller is, in effect, "too old," according to one player spokesman.

He added: "There's a communications gup. We had the talent this year but he didn't exploit it." This year's squad was 23-21. popular. Its rich taste comes on light and goes down easy. In any drink.
