8, is not too different from those of the past, nor is the instruction. The day begins at 8 a.m. with two hours of classroom work. Then it's outside to one of the four diamonds at the Expoville complex. Here students, who vary in age from 18 to 38, go through game-like workouts, until 6 p.m., with only a half-hour lunch break interrupting the routine.

Specific game situations are created for the students, who bat and field as well as umpire. We watched the other day as two student umpires one working behind the plate and the other the bases handled themselves in a one-out, two-men-on and three-and-two-count-on-the-batter situation. This was just one of the numerous game experiences students face each' day. Play is halted frequently by instructors to either correct a mistake or to show one of the students an easier way to position himself-to make the proper call. Students in the current class come from 36 states and Canada.

Each paid a tuition fee of $300. The student pays for his room and board and other personal expenses. The prospective umpires, however, get a special $4-per-day room rate, which is a break because tourists pay five to six times that figure to soak up Florida's wintertime sunshine. TYPICAL OF the students is John Hirschbeck, a well-conditioned 21-year-old from Stratford, Conn. Hirschbeck, who has only a semester to go before receiving his degree at Central Connecticut State College, decided as far back as five years ago that he wanted to be an umpire.

"I just like the game, I want to be a part of baseball," says Hirschbeck. Terry Hill from St. Louis, is a different story. He is 28 and married. "I want to be an umpire," he said.

"I know I'd enjoy the job." Will either of them make it? Perhaps, but the odds are against them. The mortality rate is extremely high. "Did you know that 90 per cent of the umpires who go into professional baseball quit within the first two years?" Somers asked. "Too many of these young fellows just can't take the pressure," added Wendelstedt, who resides in Ormond Beach during the off-seastm. "It takes a special kind of person to be an umpire." Wendelstedt is only one of two big league umps working as instructors at Somers' school.

The other is Dick Stello, of the American League who was one of the six umpires who worked last fall's World Series. The other six instructors are minor league umpires, hoping, of to some day make it to the "biggies." Although it took him only four years to advance from the old Florida-Georgia League to the National League, Wendelstedt says "it usually takes five or six years for an umpire to work himself up from the bushes to the big leagues. AND ONCE you make it to the bigs, you're home free well, almost. The starting pay for a major league umpire is $17,000 and goes all the way to $50,000, which a few are being paid. In addition, he is given $51 a day expense money.

Travel is paid by the league. There also are some inticing fringe benefits, including free medical and dental care for each umpire and the members of his family. But there are times when being an umpire can be somewhat degrading. Wendelstedt, for example recalls the first time he. ever worked a major league game.

"It was in spring training and the Dodgers were playing the Yankees," he said. "I was working behind the plate and Mickey Mantle was the hitter. I called a third strike on him and as he walked away he looked me straight in the eye and said: 'Kid, I don't know where you came from, but the strike zone up here is the same as it was at the place you And being an umpire can. sometimes be embarrassing, as Wendelstedt knows from experience. It happened in the first game Harry ever worked as a professional.

"It was opening night in Brunswick, Ga and I was behind the plate," Wendelstedt recalled. "As I bent over to call the first pitch of the game, I heard a sickening sound behind The seam in his pants had split.
