move within one game of the Olympic ice hockey Championship Bill Christian a five foot nine inch tiger from Warroad Minn fired home the winhing goal which kept the stars and stripes at the head of the pa rade with an unsullied record and only Czechoslovakia stand ing between the Yanks and the Olympic hockey title But there were heroes galore in this grim savage game which was more of a combination wrestling match and football game than ice hockey The brother act of Bill and Roger Christian and of Bill and Bob Cleary accounted for the goals and then there was the raging defensive play of blond Rodney Paavola of Hancock Minn and the gutty goal tend ing of Jack McCartan of St Paul It was more than a game Those Yankee youngsters were trying to show the blue and white garbed Russians how free teams and the United States will have a sec ond chance in competition next weekend at Sun Har riman Cup Race resh from Olympic glory or disappointment members of the 14 squads will be in individual competition this time for the cup named after the founder Teams that have accepted bids to the race include the strong squads of Canada Aus tria rance Italy and Switz erland Besides the United States accuracy provided the close in jump shot opportun ities to ullerton who scored 26 joints and forward John Lindberg who added 17 for the Chiefs Schacher was no slouch with the shooting eye either as he flipped in 12 field goals and a gift toss for a total of 25 points They had to outshoot a tre mendously hot first half per formance by the Libby club to get the victory The Loggers led by diminu tive Sandy Burns hit an amaz ing 72 per cent in the opening two periods to take a 46 38 halftime lead Burns ended up the night tied with ullerton for high scorer hitting 1 1 field goals and four gift tosses for 26 points orward Tom Murphy added 13 for Libby and center Dean Morigeau had 12 Burns led them to a 20 17 first period lead as he connected on four field goals and two gift tosses But ul
