The scene stealer, however, is Pat Harrington, cast as Ann's leacherous building superintendent. As the daughters, McKenzie Phillips and Valerie Bartinelli could be better, but their shortcomings are hardly noticable, for the adults carry the show. The opener's plot, rather skimpy I have to say, concerns the mother's handling of her oldest daughter's request to go on a coed camping trip. When Ann says no, the daughter walks out in a huff, going back to her father she feels she can manipulate. OF COURSE a happy ending, and if the crisis is solved a mite too easily, well, that's a problem "One Day at a Time" shares with almost all the situation comedies, which have to wrap everything up neatly in 25 minutes.

Hit May Come Divorce is as much a part of daytime television as are detergent commercials, but until three months ago there was an unwritten rule as old as the medium itself that said leading ladies of prime time series could only be married, widowed or single. And then along came "Fay," a highly-touted NBC situation comedy that revolved around a recently divorced middle-aged woman trying to make a new life for herself. IF THAT SHORT-lived series is remembered at all, it will be because it shattered a taboo. To hear Lee Grant, who played the title role, tell it, "Fay" flopped because NBC timidly censored all the reality out of it. That certainly didn't help matters, but the truth is, Miss Grant's was the only regular character who was believable and the writing was substandard.

Though the situation lent itself to subtly and an occasional touch of pathos, "Fay" was too often a three-alarm farce. The nicest observation that can be made about" "One Day at a Time" then is that it's almost everything "Fay" was supposed to be but wasn't. This new sitcom, a Norman Lear production which debuts tonight on CBS, also involves a divorcee, one Ann Romano, who lives in an apartment in Indianapolis, and supports her two teen-aged daughters by selling Avon products. INSPIRED CASTING is one of the secrets of Lear's series' success, and "One Day at a Time" is no Warning: The Surgeon General Has Determined Cigarette Smoking Is Dangerous to Your Health.
