By Michelle Tan mtang stcloudtimesxom COLLEGEVILLE It was a summer of firsts for Katie Benson.

For the first time, she didn't go to State Fair. For the first time, she didn't celebrate a friend's June 18 birthday. For the first time, someone she loves was missing. All 1,800 students at St John's University are set to start fall semester today. All except one.

Joshua Guimond has been missing since Nov. 9. He was last seen leaving a a friend's on-cam-pus apartment. He would have been a senior at St. John's this year.

"It's definitely going to be weird starting classes again," said Benson, a student at the College of St. Benedict who dated Guimond for five years. This fall, she'll retake two classes she dropped last year because of Guimond's disappearance. She'll have 16 credits this fall. University officials also are preparing for a new school year without Guimond.

Investigation A display dedicated to Guimond is set up in Sexton Commons, the student union at St John's. University leaders continue to work with the Stearns County Sheriff's Department, which is investigating the case, said Jason Laker, dean of campus "Enjoy an Active, Supportive Community" 253-8450 www.countrymanorcampus.org 520 First St. NE Sartell "When I'm sad, or when I'm thinking of Josh, I look at a lot of pictures of us," she said. "I see we were happy together. He didn't have anything to run from.

He was happy." On June 18 any other year, Guimond would have celebrated his birthday with friends and family. This year, there were no parties for Guimond's 21st birthday, Benson said. Guimond's mother, Lisa Cheney, wrote a letter to her only son on his birthday. The letter is part of the display in Sexton Commons. "I remember the day you came into the world.

I was so nervous and afraid. You were my first and only baby, the letter reads. "Remember how I would tease you about taking care of me when I got old? How you would have a big mansion, and I would live in the west wing. Well, I'm still counting on you to take care of me. I want you to know how much I love and miss you every day.

I will always have hope that we will find you and bring you home." St. Cloud's FIRST and ONLY 24-HOUR Premier Health Club. away from both campuses. She also didn't spend a lot of time at home in Maple Lake, the hometown she shares with Guimond. "I thought about him every day, but it wasn't like we were around places we had gone, or passing by his house every day," she said.

Instead, Benson worked for an insurance company in Bloom-ington this summer. She was home in Maple Lake on weekends, but during the week, she stayed with her sister in Prior Lake. To cope, Benson relied on memories. life at St John's. The sheriffs department continues to collect information on the case, but is not actively searching for Guimond.

Numerous searches of the lakes around campus yielded no results. "For me, I'm wanting the students not only to remember Josh, but also to be very mindful of themselves and not take things for granted," Laker said. "I want the family to know that we're thinking about him and about them." 'He was happy Benson spent her summer 0T AC month HUPJtYTIMEIS RUNNING OUT!" She also hopes to help the women of St. Ben's become relevant members of society. "They're going to walk out of here ready to succeed," Guardo said.

Guardo said she's motivated by three P's: people, programs, partnerships. The people on campus are The liberal arts philosophy at St. Ben's gives it a nice mix of programs. And when it comes to partnerships, Guardo looks forward to working with the monastery on campus and St Johns. "This is a unique situation," she said.

"Two institutions are able to come together and basically agree to put their resources together to provide the best to students." Apart from the goals she has set for her time at St Ben's, Guardo has found time to enjoy the campus. They also were older (58 years old compared with 57), and were less likely to be married (58.9 percent compared with 89.6 percent). Susan Lester, chairwoman of the college's board of trustees, will lead the 13-member search committee. Search consultant Academic Search Consultation Service will help the committee devise, organize and implement the search process.

Committee members will have a list of three to five finalists no later than February 2004. A new president should be in place by July 1, one day after Guardo's term ends. College officials have said little about the search, but in recent years, institutions in general have been less likely to insist on presidential experience in searching for new campus leaders, according to ACE. ACE also reports that the four areas that occupied the most significant amount of presidents' time were planning, fund-raising, budget issues and personnel issues. Making progress Guardo was the unanimous choice of the 35-member board of trustees to lead St Ben's through the presidential transition.

Her goals while in office are simple. "I want to make sure we keep making progress," Guardo said. ID!
