Pontiac - Tempest - Jeep Bill Sullivan, Sales Manager Immaculate Conception Church —Division and Ash Streets— By Father Joseph N. Doyle / The rapid growth of Blytheville induced Right Reverend Bishop to transfer the residence of the pastor of the mission to that place in 1921. Rev. Father Butterbach was at that time, in charge. Until then there was no resident pastor in Blytheville, so thatHuffman and Manila, as well as Blytheville were visited at stated times by the different pastor* who resided at Osceola. Before the building of St. Peter's, Mass was said in the house of Mrs. C. J. Evrard. In 1910 St. Peter's Church was dedicated by Bishop Morris. A Catholic school was.opened in 1915 by the Benedictine Sisters from Jonesboro, Arkansas. The school is remarkably well appreciated by the fair-minded and friendly- non-Catholic people; who clearly see the edvantages in the splendid moral training which the children receive from the Sisters of St. Benedict. The church, school, and rectory was originally located on the three corners Of West Ash and Division Street. In 1924 the parish plant was moved from Ash and Division to Division and Ch'ickasawba where a larger tract of land could be had. In February of 1927 the name of the church was changed from St. Peter's to Immaculate Conception in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. With the building of new a church the parish began to grow. The school during this time numbered approximately 150 pupils, making the old three classroom school lit- erally burst at the seams. In 1945 Father B. F. McDevitt moved to Blytheville. His goal as pastor was the building of a new school. Before he was transferred in 1950, he had the initial plans for the new school. However, living conditions for the Sisters became unbearable in the old school building and a new convent was needed. The convent was finished in 1946 and the Sisters moved in for Christmas of that year. Father McDevitt finished paying the parish debt, the first time the parish was free of debt in 20 years. The parish grew during this time and numbered almost 300 souls, the greatest in the history of the parish so far. Father McDevitt continued his goal for a new school, and with the erection of the convent for the Sisters, saved $34,000 for the school when he was transferred in January 1950. The new school was started in 1951. The school was completed in 1952, with a debt of $25,000. This debt was paid off November 20, 1954. All the purchase of this new property and the construction of the new school would not have been possible without the help of non-Catholics of the community and the Altar Society and the Knights of Columbus, who comprise all the people of the parish and the people of Blytheville, and the surrounding communities. The present pastor, Father Joseph N. Doyle arrived in May, 1963. Many improvements have been made, and it is hoped that in the not too distant future, a new church will be built on Main at 13th.
