C-6 FRIDAY, AUGUST 22, 2008 www.MyCentralJefsey.com COURIER NEWS FOOTBALL FORMER RUTGERS STANDOUT FACING UPHILL CLIMB Despite late start, Girault showing Jets he can play By JANE McMANUS GANNETT NEWS SERVICE HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. When Ron Girault was little, his three older brothers played a modified football game they liked to call "Kill the Carrier." It's a lot like what you think: Someone wOuld throw the ball up, and everyone would try to catch it and run until they eventually got piimmeled by everyone else. Jeff Girault said they wouldn't let Ron play. He was kind of small, and they were afraid he would get hurt and they would hear it from their mother, Marie, a Haitian immigrant with strong traditional values. But one day, the brothers were feeling kind, and Ron learn and improve as much as anything.

"I think that's a great thing for anybody in Ron's situation to know, that one thing about this organization is that if you deserve to be here in the end, you're going to be here," defensive coordinator Bob Sutton said. "No matter where you started on this thing, if you can help us be successful, we're going to find a way to keep you around." Even though Girault has an uphill climb, safety Kerry Rhodes said the coaches must see something. "He's still here, so he's doing something right," Rhodes said. Jane McManus jmcmanuslohud.com ROOKIE HASNT HAD TIME ON THE Manningham cleared By MIKE DOUGHERTY GANNETT NEWS SERVICE EAST RUTHERFORD -Since there was a measure of curiosity about Mario Man-ningham, the level of frustration grew each day the rookie spent on the sideline with a nagging injury. He's got a lot of ground to make up.

Manningham lost momentum after leaving the University of Michigan and fell into the third round of the draft because of poor workouts and off-the-field issues. Manningham wasn't able to get to speed in the spring because of a hip flexor, and he spent three weeks in Albany rehabbing a problematic quad. "We just don't see anything," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said at one point. "He's in every meeting, he does all that, but he doesn't get to rep it. For a young guy, they need to do that." Manningham finally was cleared to return Wednesday LEGAL ADVERTISEMENTS TO SUBMIT A LEGAL ADVERTISEMENT: LEGALS MAY BE SUBMITTED VIA EMAIL: or brought in on disk You must include all of the billing Information: Account Name, Address, Telephone number and credit card information.

If they could even make contact, it was only by the barest of fingernails. The brothers took Ron to Spring Valley Memorial Park near their home, and he was put in pads for the first time with a pee-wee team. He was the smallest kid at linebacker, and Jeff remembers how everyone watched in awe as he made his first tackle. "He leveled the guy," Jeff said. It is the same story at every level at St.

Joseph Regional High School, at Rutgers University and now with the Jets. Girault was brought in at safety a and is hoping to catch the eyes of coaches. He could show up on the field Saturday against the Jets, but the medical staff gets the last word. "We will see," Coughlin said. Is there enough time for Manningham to make a move? "He hasn't had much time," Coughlin said.

"Not much. We'll see how he is (today). He practiced well (Wednesday). He practiced pretty well (Thursday). And if he gets the green light for the game, then he certainly will play." The news was well-received.

"It's nothing to be rushed," said Manningham, whose 27 touchdowns at Michigan rank behind Braylon Edwards, Anthony Carter and Desmond Howard on the all-time list. "I don't have no choice but to be ready. I know we have a number of receivers, but when my number is called I have to be ready." The spotlight is no longer waiting to be occupied, though. August 1 9, 2008 8222008, 1X Fee: $71.04 To place a classified ad, call (877) 707-6500 I mvcentraliersev.com I week after training camp started, and he's still here despite the odds. "I'm just trying to go out each day and get a little better," Girault said. It's a difficult starting point.

He arrived July 29, after the rookies had established rapport with one another. The roster must be cut from 80 to 53 by the start of the regular season, but if the Jets like what they see, they could assign him to the practice squad to retain him. "It's not at all easy to come in when the process is already started and the coaches have an idea of what the players can do," fellow rookie Dwight Low-ery said. FIELD to return Tyree were not ready to play when camp opened. They still aren't.

Amani Toomer and Steve Smith were in and out with their own injury problems. The shuffling allowed Domenik Hixon to step in and win universal praise. Despite the competition, Manningham believes he's developed useful relationships with all of the receivers in camp. And since he spent most of the last month standing next to Burress and Toomer, he was able to listen in whenever they were talking shop. "It's real good for me because they've been in the NFL for a long time now," Manningham said.

"I could learn a lot from both of them. I could learn a lot from all the receivers here." NOTES: Coughlin plans to use the starters for two quarters Saturday against the Jets. "He has had some opportunities late in the game, made a few plays, and he'll get some more opportunities," Mangini said. "It's that time where, as you get those chances, if you just make a few plays, like with (wide receiver) David Clowney, you start popping a little bit and then you get a few more. "He has made some plays both on defense and on special teams, which is positive." You don't get your legs back immediately, but that's why we have a plan in place. And like we do every year we'll be ready physically by the opener." While he singled out Joe Mar-tinek, who led all backs in the scrimmage with 37 yards on four carries, as a tailback who "deserves more and more" touches, Schiano pointed to a pair of 7-yard runs by Young in a situational overtime period that left an impression. "I thought what was key with Kordell were those two runs he had in the two-minute drill," Schiano said. "He was really tired but he was able to pop two runs. So that was good for him and for us." With the Sept.

1 opener against Fresno State just 10 days away, Schiano said he wouldn't be adverse to using all four of his tailbacks, including Jourdan Brooks, if one doesn't emerge in the next week. "I really feel comfortable with all four," he said. "I don't know if that's fair to a running back because do you ever really get the feel for what you're doing if William J. Now he has been getting the chance to play in preseason games, and next up for the Jets are the Giants on Saturday. Girault didn't know if he would be around long enough, but there is nothing like playing in an NFL stadium. "It was a great feeling. There's nothing like it," Girault said. "The stadium doesn't even have to be filled and everything's loud, everything's exciting.

The atmosphere is just great." As a free agent, it is an uphill climb for Girault, but the coaches know that and are looking for growth and the ability to you run one and then you're out? It depends on who the kid is. "I think we really have to do some decision-making but that decision-making can fluxuate from week-to-week until we figure it out." As for his other impressions, Schiano liked the turnovers his defense generated and said his offensive line has "a real good feel for picking up pressure." As for the offensive line's run-blocking, Schiano admitted that it's a work-in-progress. "I thought the run blocking was good in spots and then there would be an isolated breakdown that led to the play not working," he said. "There was not a group breakdown, so that's good." Heading into the scrimmage, Schiano pointed to the competition between Zaire Kitchen and Joe Lefeged at safety and the backup quarterback duel between Jabu Lovelace and Chris Paul-Etienne as positions that were up for grabs. Of the safeties, Schiano said, "Really too close to call.

But some of it takes care of itself. Joe plays nickel so he and Zaire can be on the field at the same time." And he then reiterated what prior to the meeting.
