Warren Croke, Channel 9's news director for the past three years, and Todd Persons, the station's most experienced reporter, were fired. General manager Walter Windsor declined to comment on the dismissal of Persons, who previously worked for WDBO-Channel 6.

About Croke's dismissal, Windsor would only say that he's "always looking for ways to improve the ratings of our newscasts." RATINGS MEAN revenues, of course, and newscasts are for most stations the single most productive source of locally generated revenues. At Channel 9, the ratings of "Eyewitness News" leaves a lot to be desired. "EyewiN ness" is solidly entrenched in third place and has been for years. The most recent Arbitron ratings survey showed Channel 9's 6 p.m. news getting 19 per cent of the audience to Channel 6's 35 per cent and WESH-Channel 2's 32 per cent.

At 1 1 p.m., Channel 9 was getting 25 per cent while Channel 6 and Channel 2 were getting 28 per cent and 40 per cent, respectively. But Windsor believes that the fortunes of "Eyewitness News" will improve with the coming of news director Robert Jordon, who'll be joining the station Aug. 23. Jordon, 30, for the past two years has been news director 1030 and anchorman at WKRG, the top-rated station in Mobile, Ala. JORDON, WINDSOR said, has the aggressive leadership qualities he was looking for and also has had experience with electronic news gathering equipment that Channel 9 has recently acquired.

In addition to his responsibilities as news director, Jordon will coanchor the 6 p.m. editions of "Eyewitness News" with Ted Russell, but the teaming won't take place until Sept. 8. The noon newscast and the late-evening newscast will be anchored by either Jordon or Russell solo. Who gets what, Windsor said, would be decided in a few days.

Until Jordon gets settled in Orlando, Windsor said, sports director Lee Watson will be assigned overall responsibility for the news department and reporter John Ziegler will be acting assignment's editor. BOTTOM OFTHE BARREL DEPARTMENT: I knew that the supply of movies never shown before on net work television had run short, what with Hollywood turning out fewer movies than in past years, but this is ridiculous. NBC plans to televise "Hercules" and "Hercules Unchained," a pair of incredibly hokey Italian-made not-so-spectaculars starring Steve Reeves, in prime time. 11:00 HIJIJ I TRADE IN YOUR 010 Tl 11:15 WHEEL CHAIRS' Colonial Dnigs GILLIGAN ISLAND 00 LEROY JENKINS (It HOT FUDGE 24) MAKE A WISH (44) HOUR OF POWER 100 i EMERGENCY 4 (DU ES SESAME STREET (4) THE FLINTSTONES OU PEBBLES AND BAMM BAMM OlMTW HONGKONG PH00EY 130 I (Si JOSIE ANO THE PUSSYCATS (4 C3 1J BUGS BUNNY OI0 1f 24 TOM JERRY 144) MEDIX 100 8 I 'i WALDO KITTY (DCS E) ELECTRIC CO.
