Turley Top Sign Stealer PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (AP)This is a warning to Whitey Ford, Ralph Terry and all the New York Yankee pitchers. Better change your mound habits. Bob TuT; ley, your former pitching mate, now with Los Angeles, will be there "reading" you the first time Ihe Yankees meet the Angels this year. Turley, as Manager Ralph Houk and all his Yankees can attest, has the reputation for being the best sign reader in baseball. He has an uncanny knack of detecting certain peculiarities of pitch- ers which serve as give-away signs when those pitchers are preparing to throw a curve, fast ball or whatever. As a members of the Yankees from 1954 through 1962, one of Turley's main functions was to sit on the bench, and observe the pitchers, not only those of the enemy but all the pitchers wearing Yankee uniforms. At one time or another, he spotted give-away signs by virtually all of the Yankee pitchers, habits which they immediately strove to eliminate. "Our first meeting should prove quite interesting," mused Turley, who is as adept as stealing signs as he is of reading them. "I know this ... there'll be three or four guys on the Yankees I'll worry the pants off." According to Turley, Ford, the great Yankee southpaw, calls his own pitches instead of taking signs from the catcher.
