Northeast, South lead income gains WASHINGTON (AP) - States in New England and the South led the country in gains in personal income from July through September with New Hampshire posting the biggest improvement, a 2.1 percent increase which was almost twice the national average, the government reported Monday. The Commerce Department said that non-farm personal income rose by 1.1 percent during the third quarter, matching the increase from April through June. Both quarters reflected the modest economic growth of last year, a time when service industries enjoyed prosperity but the manufacturing sector was held back by deep inroads from foreign imports. Following New Hampshire's 2.1 percent income gain, residents of South Carolina and Georgia both enjoyed increases of 2 percent while Tennessee had a 1.7 percent gain and income in Massachusetts rose by 1.6 percent. Analysts said the big increase in New Hampshire reflected increases in residential construction and private-service payrolls which were the largest in the country. "New England in general is doing well because it has a favorable industrial mix emphasizing defense companies and high-tech industries," said Rudolph DePass, a Commerce Department analyst. "As growth occurs in these industries, then you have a spillover of growth in construction and services as well." Mississippi suffered the sharpest income decline from July through September, a 2 percent drop that was blamed in part on the damage to residential property done by Hurricane Elena. Other states with declines or no change in incomes were Montana, down 0.9 percent during the quarter; West Virginia, down 0.6 percent, and Maine, with no growth.
