THE SALINA JOURNAL SPORTS SUNDAY, APRIL 22, 2001 CI • ON THE OUTSIDE April one of the best months to be outdoors April just about has to be the best month of the year to be outside. Everyone is tired of the winter and the cold weather, ready for warm sunshine. The water is warming and the fish are starting to bite, the turkeys are gobbling and responding ' to calls, the plum bushes are blooming 1^ and smelling soooo good, the spring rains have caused everything to green nicely and added their fragrance to the air. Oh isn't it wonderful to be alive in April! Sure, there are some downsides to spring in April — yard mowing starts, thunderstorms rumble and with them some severe weather, and an occasional frost stiU TOMMIE BERGER fisheries biologist, Kansas Department ofWildlife and Parks nips at our gardens. But still I'd take April all summer long if I could. Right now the white bass are moving into the rivers above our reservoirs to spawn and that gets anglers excited. White bass like to spawn in the riffles and pools in the rivers where they scatter the eggs randomly in the current. Early in the season, the river just above the lakes are best, but as the spawning season progresses, the whites often move miles above the reservoirs. And the larger rivers aren't the only spawning locations, often smaller streams feeding into the reservoirs will hold spawning white bass. AU anglers need are a good spinning rod and reel; a tacklebox full of jigs, roadrunners, or small spinners; and a stringer Waders of some kind also allow for easier access to some streams and save a lot of lures. Some anglers fish with live minnows under a bobber and others even try fly rods. Whatever fishing equipment you use, a pound white bass caught in river current wiU be a challenge to land and lots of fun. Turkey season is on and I have seen some nice turkeys harvested. The gobblers are sounding off well and responding to calls for some hunters. Most gobblers have a harem of hens with them which always adds to the challenge early in the season. As the season progresses, the hens will begin nesting and the gobblers will begin traveling more to find girlfriends. We have had some windy days so far — par for April — but we have also had some perfect, calm mornings for hearing those gobbles at daybreak. The turkey season runs through May 20 so there is still plenty of time to spend some quality hours in the turkey woods. The largemouth bass in farm ponds are biting well so don't overlook this activity in your spare April time. Coming out of winter, farm-pond bass are hungry and aggressive when that water temperatiu-e gets up to that 60-degree mark. Spinner baits will take a lot of bass in April. And, while you are out white bass fishing, turkey hunting, or pond bass fishing don't forget to look for some morel mushrooms. April showers bring May flowers and morels — it should be a good year this year as things are pretty damp. All we need right now are some hot, steamy days and warm nights. In addition to mushrooms, I always find a few shed deer antlers while turkey hunting in April — an added bonus to any outing. Steve Price, the fisheries biologist at Stbtkton, says the wiper fishing at Webster Reservoir is heating up fast in mid-April too. The walleye spawn is over for the year but now it is time for the wipers, stripers, and crappie to be getting active. April has to be one of the best fishing months of the year. Be sure to check the KDWP web site for up-to-date fishing reports for every lake and reservoir: www.kdwp.state.ks.us. I really like to see things grow, so April is also garden month for me and a lot of other folks. The peas, potatoes, radishes, onions, spinach, and lettuce are all peaking out of the ground in my garden. The broccoli and cabbage plants have taken hold and I am babying a few tomato plants, too. The first planting of sweet corn is in but not up yet. What I don't like to see grow is the grass and weeds in the yard and the flower beds — yes, the mower started after a long winters nap and I still remember how to use a hoe. Yes, April and the outdoors just seem to go together. Get out and enjoy it while it lasts — as with other fun months of the year it will be over before you know it.
