(AP) Employes of a grocery store here weren't about to let a man waving a gun at them get away with Ms holdup plan. They picked up what was'at hand for weapons and foiled the crime. The man walked into the AP store just before closing Hme about 11 Saturday night, pulled a .38 caliber handgun and demanded cash from the store safe. A part time employe, who also is a city police officer, knocked the man's gun from his hand with a price'stamper. Other workers wrestled file man to the floor, and one employe subdued him by hitting on the head with a can of fruit.

Police, then arrived and arrested Ronald Offutt, 34, of Fairmont, W. Va. on a charge of attempted robbery. Bomb Murder Trial'Nears End PHOENIX, Ariz. (AP) The murder trial of two men accused in the car bomb slaying of reporter Don Bolles is nearing conclusion after 15 weeks of proceedings highlighted by conflicting testimony from an admitted murderer, a swindler and a dope pusher.

Catholics Hear Carter's Sister ATLANTIC CITY, N.J.

(AP) Ruth Carter Stapleton, President Carter's sister, says men should be "exalted and take, their rightful place" in leadership roles while women serve as society's "undergjrding." Before leading more than 25,000 Catholic charismatics in a mass prayer service Saturday night, Mrs. Stapleton said, "There definitely is an equality between male and female, but there are different roles. Feminine is more the intuitive and masculine is more the intellectual." Mrs. Stapleton, an evangelical Baptist speaker for 19 years, said that although men belong in primary leadership posts, women should pursue goals if they have talent, particularly in religious service. She said she has "nothing against" women who want to be priests or ministers, "but I can't see why women would want to be ordained." Former Times Sunday Editor Is Dead NEW YORK (AP) Lester Market, who edited the Sunday sections of The New York Times for more than.40 years and made them a model for Sunday papers across the nation, died of cancer Sunday hi his Manhattan apartment.

He was 83 and had retired in 1968 as associate editor of The Tjmes, four years after leaving the Sunday editor's job. Markel was bom in New York, attended City College and graduated in 1914 from Columbia University's School of Journalism. Proxmire Asks Arms Sale Lid WASHINGTON (AP) Sen. William Proxmire proposed Sunday to impose a declining ceiling on the sale of American arms so that no more than $4 billion worth could be sold after fiscal year 1979. The Wisconsin Democrat, a member of the defense and foreign operations subcommittees of the Senate Appropriations Committee, said arms sales could be scaled down from $9.9 billion in fiscal year 1977 to S8 billion in fiscal 1978, $8 billion in fiscal year 1979 and $4 billion each year thereafter.

STAPLETON 2 Die In Roane Accident LOONEYVILLE, W.Va. (AP) A 40 year old Clay County woman and her young nephew have died in a two vehicle accident on W.Va. 36 near this Roane County community. State police in Spencer identified the victims in the Saturday accident as Betty J. Short of Maysel and Clifford Simonds of Parkersburg.

The Short vehicle went out of control and skidded sideways into the path of a car driven by Mark G. Feder, 23, of Liverpool in Jackson County, police said. Hunter Killed By His Own Gun BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. (AP) A Cabell County man has been shot to death in a hunting accident near his home here, sheriff's deputies said. Harold Dean Lycans, 28, was squirrel hunting Saturday when a shotgun he was using discharged, deputies said.

Huntington Hospital Strike Ends HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) Thirty five cents an hour richer, employes of Cabell Huntington Hospital returned to work Sunday after ratifying a new two year The ratification vote Saturday night ended a 22 day walkout by members if the Natinal Hospital Workers' Union Local 1199. Some 500 employes were nvolved in the strike. The new contract provides for a 35 cent per hour increase the first year, with another 30 cents or eight per cent hike the second year, gradually in- reased company paid premiums on medical insurance, a modified union hop in which all new employes must join the union, as well as other enefiis. 1914, he was a son of the late Henry and Retta Selvey Boley. A member of Laurel Lodge 104 at Lawton, Mr. Boley was employed by the Royal Coal Co. at Layland. His wife, Ann Marie Boley.

Clyde Hensley in charge. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery at Ballengee. Mrs. Garten died at 6:45 p.m. Saturday in a Hinton hospital after a long illness.

Sarah Godbey Services for Mrs. Sarah L. Godbey, 93, of Harper will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Melton Mortuary chapel with the Rev. Car! Geisinger in charge.

Burial will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. She died in a local hospital at 1:05 p.m. Sunday following a long illness. Born at Saxon, April 7, 1884, she was a daughter of the late William Clark and Elmira Milam Lucas. Mrs.

Godbey was a lifelong resident of Raleigh County and a member of the Missionary Baptist Church. She was a midwife for several years prior to her illness. Her Rev. James W. Godbey, died in 1964.

Two sons, Robert and Asa, and one daughter, Mada, also are dead. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Brada Bennett of Harper, Mrs. Ophie Johnson of Hammonton Park, N. Mrs.

Mable Breeden of Richmond, and Mrs. Anita Light of Beckley; three sisters, Mrs. Rosa Patton and Mrs. Betty Fitzgerald, both of Beckley, and Mrs. Gpi Manning of Huntington; II grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and two great great- grandchildren.

Hill was an employe of the Itmann Coal Co. and a member of the Rockcastle Baptist Church, Survivors include his wife. Mrs. Delphine Walker Hill: three sons. Barry of Beckley.

Mr. Lawson died Sunday morning in a Pocahontas County hospital after a long illness. Born May 10, 1896, in Braxton County, he was the son of the late Cornele and Ida Knight Lawson. A resident of Pocahonlas County for 50 years. Mr.

Lawson attended the Frank Nazarene Church. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Kathleen Mick of Frank and Mrs. Geraldine Bennett and Mrs. Athlee Bennett, both of Durbin: three sons, Henry and Ronnie, both of Frank, and Chester Eugene of two sisters.

Sterling Leftwich Mr. Sterling Leftwich. 47. of Beckley, died at 1:15 a.ra. Sunday in a local hospital after a long illness.

Bom March 11. 1930 in Philadelphia, he was a son of tlie late Rav and Jennie Turner Leftwich. Mr. Leftwich was a cab driver. Survivors include two brothers.

James F. Leftwich of Harper Heights and Dorsie S. Leltwu-h of Chicago, and one sister, Mrs. Katherine Lee of Philadelphia. The body is at the Ritchie and Johnson Funeral Parlor.

Judea Shrine No. 13, Masonic Hall, Howe Street, 8 p.m. Beckley Driver Hurt A Beckley man was in "guarded" condition at a Charleston hospital Sunday after a traffic accident near Mill Creek Saturday afternoon. Randall Reggi, 23, of Rt. 4 was traveling east on W.

Va. 61 between the Batoff Mountain turnoff and Mount Hope when he lost control of his 1967 Opel and ran over an embankment, state police said. Reggi suffered a back fracture, a hospital spokesman said. A passenger, James Bair, of Bradley, was uninjured, police said. Damage to Reggi's car was estimated at 51,000 by police.

Vorster Denies Nuclear Promise PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) Prime Minister John Vorster Said in an interview broadcast Sunday that he never promised President Carter that South Africa would not develop nuclear weapons. He simply repeated a previous state. ment that "we are only interested in peaceful development of nuclear facilities," Vorster said in the interview with the American television network ABC. Carter told a Washington news conference last August that South Africa had informed U.S. officials it does hot have and is not planning to develop either peaceful or military nuclear devices; The question of South Africa's nuclear'intentions arose last summer amid a series of reports from the Soviet Union and France that this country was planning to set off a nuclear test explosion.
