Cloud Youth Boxing will conduct pre-season boxing practice at the Box- Blazers By Frank Rajkowski frajkowskistcloudtimes.com ST. JOSEPH -The College of St Benedict volleyball team comes into tonight's MIAC opener against St. Thomas scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Claire Lynch Hall on a roll. Despite being picked to finish seventh in the conference's preseason coaches poll, the Blazers are off to a 5-0 start.

They are the only unbeaten MIAC team. Last weekend, St Benedict went 4-0 to win the Augsburg Tournament championship. In the title match, the Blazers defeated Wisconsin-Stout, which was ranked No. 17 in the latest NCAA Division III poll. "That was a huge confidence booster for us," said junior outside hitter Shantelle Needham, who is averaging a team-best 3.71 kills per game and was named to the all-tournament team this past weekend.

"We know what we can accomplish now. We saw Football DIVISION II POLL Through Sept 12 From Page ID Vikings Nelson and Jones were OK, although Jones who also suffered a bruised chest and "bruised pride" according to Tice was burned by Terry Glenn on a 32-yard touch-down pass before halftime. Tice said Jones is penciled in as Minnesota's third cor-nerback in the nickel pack-. age, but that spot also could be won by Shaw, Brown or. Nelson.

Shaw has started 88 of the 125 games in which he has played. He spent the past two seasons as a reserve cornerback for Oakland. Shaw had 64 tackles in 16 games in 2003 before signing with Carolina in April. The Panthers cut him earlier this month. But Shaw, a 10-year veteran who's played in Super Bowls with New England and Oakland, figured he would fit in somewhere in theNFL "I like to crack heads," he said.

"These guys like to hit" Brown started nine of 37 career games for the New York Giants and was cut by Washington this preseason. "We think it's an upgrade in our depth," Tice said. To make room on the active roster, the Vikings released cornerback Omare Lowe. They also released practice squad safety Oliver Celestin. For now, the focus is on making sure Shaw and Brown memorize the play book in time for Philadelphia.

"It's going to be tough," Winfield said. "It's taken me a while to learn this system. To come in, your head's going to be spinning. Hopefully they'll step up and get the job done." Shaw, for one, says he's been rushed into tougher situations. Last year, Oakland safety Rod Woodson underwent minor knee surgery, and the Raiders converted Shaw from cornerback to safety to replace him.

"I had never played safety in my life," Shaw said. "I was like, Whoa." Although he'll need to make a few adjustments with the Vikings, they likely won't be as extreme as changing positions. "Consistency, determination and energy. "If it's 3-2 (in a game), we want to be the first team to five. Then we want to be the first team to 10 and 15 and so on.

It helps if you approach it that way and break it down like thai instead of thinking the whole, time about having to get to 30." Pham has been impressed by the way the Blazers are playing. "They're a well-coached team and they had a great recruiting class," Pham said. "I expect a very competitive match. St. Benedict has stepped up from where they were a year ago and they're continuing to gain ground on the top teams in the conference." Needham is hoping St.

Benedict can take another step closer with a win tonight. "I've used the analogy before that the puzzle pieces are all there for us," Needham said. "Now we're finally piecing the puzzle Shantelle Needham Averaging 3.71 kills per game progress," Pham said. "I think that will start to show in the win column soon enough." The Tommies, who are still ranked No. 23 in the nation, went 0-4 at last weekend's Washington University tournament in St.

Louis, but all four teams were ranked in the Division III top 15. Schiller said she knows her team will be in for a challenge. "They're still a strong program and they'll still be competitive, no matter who they lost," Schiller said. "We know we're going to have to play well." "Consistency is going to be huge," added Loesch, a St Cloud Cathedral graduate who spent her freshman season at St Thomas before transferring to St Benedict Swanson-Blaeser, whose team has played fewer matches than other conference squads because a scheduled trip to the Palm Classic Tournament in Palm Beach, Sept. 3-4 had to be called off because of Hurricane Frances.

"In past years, I've been lucky to have two really strong hitters. This year, I have five. I have two setters who can get the job done and a libero who has been coming up consistently huge. It's really exciting." St. Thomas was ranked No.

16 in the Division III preseason poll and was picked by the conference's coaches to finish second in the MIAC. But second-year coach Thanh Pham's team graduated a number of contributors from last season, including two-time All-American setter Jane Gibbs, and is off to a 4-6 start. Senior Claire Loesch has 48, sophomore Terri Knapper has 44 and junior Ashley Pinckney has 27. Junior Beth Schiller has 121 set assists and sophomore Monica Eiden has 90. Meanwhile, sophomore libero (defensive specialist) Laura Zwach, who was named one of this week's three MIAC players of the week, has a team-best 89 digs.
