No matter what we do to help keep your electric bill in line, there's one thing we have no power over. The amount of power you use. So we'd like to point out the most significant places where only you have the biggest opportunities to save.

Insulation 6 to 12 inches of insulation in your attic could save you real money each year. You'll save even more if you insulate your walls, heating ducts and hot water pipes. Caulking, weatherstripping, storm windows, shades and drapes also help keep heat inside in winter, and outside in summer. Thermostat Control Lower your thermostat in winter. Each degree below can save three percent of the energy needed for heating.

If you have air conditioning, a higher thermostat setting will also save energy' in summer. HotmterUse You can save up to a year of the energy needed to heat water if you turn your water heater thermostat down to 120 degrees and take quick showers instead of baths. Fix leaky hot water faucets promptly. And wash clothes in cold water, if you can. Washing and drying only full loads of clothes and dishes is more economical, too.

Appliance Efficiency If you're in the market for appliances and equipment, look for the new energy saving features on refrigerators, freezers, and dishwashers. Choose an Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) of.8 or higher on room air conditioners. While there are a lot more ways to save electricity, these are the ones that will make the biggest impression on your bill. Appalachian Power Working together is the only way. Matheny Bottom Women Keep Students Off Bus By LYNN BROOKS Correspondent MATHENY (RNS) Women from Matheny Bottom prevented a school bus from picking up their children Monday.

Mrs. i i a spokeswoman for the group, said the road through the bottom is full of deep potholes which cause cars to drag, and the bridge, which was severely damaged in last April's flood, is nothing more than wood planks laid across steel beams. The planks are not bolted to the steel and every time it rains the planks wash away or float in place so that cars living to cross it are not aware of it until they're silting in the waler, she said. The school bus has not refused to cross Ihe birdge, bul Die driver would nol pass Ihrough a legally blocked road, Mrs. Workman said.

Some of the planks in the bridge are missing and residents of the area are afraid their children will fall through the bridge and drown, she said, adding that becuase of erosion of the bank, one end of the bridge must be approached at a very precise angle. Residents of the area who have no children but suffer from health problems, which may require an ambulance, live in fear of not getting medical attention soon enough because it is not possible to get an ambulance in there, Mrs. Workman said. Residents of the area have made numerous calls to the state Department of Highways garage in Pineville since last April's flood, but have not been able to get any results, Mrs. Workman said.

Because of the Monday holiday, a statement could not be attained from the SHD in Pineville.
