Philadelphia Flyers at Dallas Stars, ESPN2. From Page ID Vikings Central Division race. But Mike Alstott overthrew a wide-open Todd Yoder on a fourth-and-inches halfback pass with 5:05 left to play, and Tampa Bay quarterback Shawn King's Hail Mary pass was batted down in the Minnesota end zone on the final play of the game. "That's the difference between winning and losing when you play against good teams," said Bucs coach Tony Dungy, whose team was the preseason division favorite but has lost three straight games. "We all set goals at the start of this season, and now we're making them happen," Vikings linebacker Ed McDaniel said.

Tampa Bay erased a 20-10 third-quarter deficit and took its first lead with 12:13 remaining. Warren Sapp blocked Gary Anderson's 52-yard field goal attempt, Donnie Abraham scooped up the ball and raced 53 yards for a touchdown that gave the Bucs a 23-20 lead. But Culpepper who was sacked six times, four of them in the second half didn't lose his poise. He completed a key 12-yard pass to Moss on a third-and-10 play to keep the drive alive, and then finished it off in style. "They blitzed, and we picked it up," said Culpepper, who was hit just as he lofted the ball to Moss.

"We've all seen Daunte make some big plays, but we haven't seen Daunte fight the way he did tonight," said Moss, who pulled Culpepper's pass away from Bucs cornerback Abraham and safety John Lynch. "He made some things happen out there." The Bucs' ensuing drive ended at the Minnesota 47 when Alstott who had been stuffed for no gain on a third-and-inches running play threw his fourth-down pass over the head of Yoder, who was open by at least 20 yards at the Vikings' 25. "A quarterback throws better than a tailback we all understand that," Green said. "We blew the coverage on the play." The Vikings then tacked on a 19-yard Anderson field goal for a 30-23 lead with 59 seconds left to play. Still, Tampa Bay wasn't finished.

Bucs quarterback Shaun King who completed 26 of 40 passes for 295 yards moved Tampa Bay to the Vikings' 36 with 14 seconds left. But Vikings tackle John Randle got his first sack of the season to push the Bucs back to the 43, and King's desperation heave on the final play fell harmlessly among a crowd of players in the end zone. The Bucs twice lost fumbles at their own 27-yard line during the first half, and the Vikings turned both mistakes into touchdowns and a 17-10 halftime lead. After former Vikings All-Pro lineman Randall McDaniel false-started on the game's first play from scrimmage, Bucs wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson was stripped of the ball by Vikings cornerback Robert Tate on the second after catching a short pass. Minnesota safety Orlando Thomas recovered the fumble the first of Johnson's five-year NFL career at the 27.

And Culpepper immediately capitalized, scrambling untouched into the left corner of the end zone on Minnesota's first play for a 7-0 lead 24 seconds into the game. There was nobody there to account for me," Culpepper said, "so I took off." Minnesota's next drive ended at the Bucs' 21 when Culpepper couldn't handle center Matt Birk's errant shotgun snap and Lynch recovered at the 26. The Bucs then put together a 74-yard drive that King capped with a 10-yard quarterback draw touchdown run with 4:01 left in the first quarter. Culpepper came back with completions of 35 and 17 yards to Moss, setting up Anderson's 37- yard field goal 2:46 into the second quarter. Tampa Bay's Aaron Stecker then fumbled when hit by Vikings kicker Mitch Berger on the ensuing return, and Minnesota's Mo Williams recovered at the Bucs' 27.

Three plays later, Culpepper stepped up in the pocked on a third-and-9 play and found wide-open tight end John Davis at the goal line for a 26-yard touchdown pass and a 17-7 lead 11:11 before halftime. Tampa Bay responded with a 19-play drive that lasted 10:05 before it finally stalled at the Minnesota 4, where Alstott was swarmed for a 1-yard loss on a third-and-2 play. Martin Gra-matica's 23-yard field goal 1:06 before halftime sliced the Vikings' lead to 17-10. Gramatica got another chance after Culpepper's ill-advised duck of a pass was intercepted by safety Damien Robinson at the Minnesota 48 with 43 seconds left, but Gramatica's 53-yard field goal attempt went wide right seven seconds before halftime. It became 20-10 on Anderson's 42-yard field goal 3:48 into the third quarter, but Gramatica's 33- and 35-yard field goals preceded Abraham's touchdown.

And Moss'. "We had to fight through adversity the entire second half," Moss said. "We just had to make plays." On Monday, nobody made a bigger one. Vikings notebook: Their 5-0 start bodes well for the Vikings. During the 1990s, 14 NFL teams started their seasons 5-0.

Thirteen earned playoff berths; 11 won division titles; seven reached the Super Bowl, and five won it One of the exceptions, of course, was the 1998 Vikings, who lost to Atlanta in the NFC Championship game. Robert Smith's 4-yard run on the last play of the third quarter moved him into second place on the Vikings' all-time rushing list. He surpassed Bill Brown (5,757) and now has 5,784 yards, behind only Chuck Foreman Culpepper's 27-yard touchdown run was the second-longest by a quarterback in team history. Fran Tarkenton had a 52-yarder against the Los Angeles Rams on Nov. 5, 1961.

Bucs offensive linemen McDaniel and Jeff Christie both heard their numbers announced Monday in their homecoming game. McDaniel had two false-start penalties, while Christie was flagged for holding. Minnesota is now 8-5 on Monday Night Football during Green's nine-year tenure, and 10-7 against Tampa Bay. If you've ever been curious about Vikings owner Red Mc-Combs' political leanings, wonder no more: his two special guests in his private box on Monday night were Sen. Rod Grams and Rush Limbaugh.
