Heckendorf became the sixth It's a year later and a year more wary for all of us Mike Lopresti Gannett News Service columnist So today we take time to commemorate horror, from the church pews to the ballparks, and look in the mirror to see what it has done to us. We all have had to make our way in a landscape twisted by televised mass murder, with its orange color terror alerts and jets on alert. The painful journey is now 12 months, and counting. Sport has been no different, the road going from shock and mourning to resolve, and from resolve to routine. That does not stop with a date on the calendar.

We honor the victims today, anguish with the survivors, comfort our children, and then move on. Will there be a Navy football game in Annapolis. A sunny late September weekend with fear still fresh in the air. I remember my flight from Indianapolis to Baltimore with only 10 passengers. The dark and quiet streets around the White House when I walked by on a Friday night The machine guns at the Naval Academy on Saturday.

And I remember the truck. Someone had driven a delivery truck by the gates at the stadium during the game, parked it, and walked away. It was something that once would go unseen and unnoticed. But not anymore. I saw the truck and looked at the reporter next to me.

He looked at the man next to this week with revived urgency. Constant symbols of the worry about what might happen next We pause today with documentaries and newspaper stories and pictures and moments of silence at the ballparks and prayer. That bright September morning comes back. The column I was writing when the first reports broke, what was that about? The NFL? The pennant races? I can't remember. It was so long ago.

Then again, it was yesterday. We are all, in a way, one year old today. Mike Lopresti is a Gannett News Service sports writer. him. We were all thinking the same horrible thought Soon, the driver was back.

Apparently, he had just needed directions. He drove away, the game went on. Navy lost to Boston College, but on the field afterward, the players from both teams sang "God Bless America." No championship contest, no mighty upset, no prime-time made-for-TV event, no Olympiad I have ever seen had a more poignant moment. Perhaps it is a curious day to remember from all the hundreds of the past year. But it will always stand for me as the reminder of how quickly the world had changed.

Suddenly we feared parked trucks, and sang together after football games. Time may have dulled the raw emotions of last autumn. The odd, vaguely disorienting feel of sports events in the middle of a national tragedy has faded. The games seem now as they should be. As they always have been.

But I know this. I have never felt entirely comfortable walking into a crowded stadium since last September. I don't think I ever will. Each of us has had to deal with the new reality the past year. The armed troops at the airports.

The bag searches, the ID checks, the shoes taken off at security checkpoints, the danger in the mail. The warnings on television, back concrete barricades again at the World Series? Will the Super Bowl once more have air cover and metal detectors at the door? How long, if ever, before the backpacks stop needing checked? This is the new normalcy, and we have been left to make the best of it It is just the natural order of things now. Even the games must be guarded Perhaps, especially the games. My first post-attack event was at Todays scoreboard DataSport Fish Game Forecast Predicting wildlife patterns The information in these charts can, to an extent, predict the optimal times of day for catching fish and hunting game.
