Market Ends Week With Rally and Modest Gain NEW YORK (AP) - The stock market closed the week Friday with a moderate gain, extending its rally into its second; day. The Dow Jones average of 30 industrials closed up 6.79 to ... 893.98. On Thursday, the Dow * 'jfose a little over 3 points. Analysts said the upturn was . primarily the result of bargain ^liiiriting. The market had been sliding in recent sessions, they '"'pointed out, and many issues • were becoming oversold. The moderate volume indicated that no great buying • : &pree had developed, analysts •'•continued. Still, they regarded -the advance as a positive sign, -since it developed in spite of fairly negative news developments. Strikes by coal miners and longshoremen dominated the economic news background. The still unsettled international montary situation and uncertainties over what will follow the expiration of the current wage-price freeze were major background factors affecting investors, brokers noted. Volume on the New York Stock Exchange totaled 13.41 million shares, compared with 13.50 million shares Thursday. The New York Slock Exchange index of some 1,300 common stocks closed up 0.33 at 54.66. Prices were most active and, a f t e r several up-and-down moves in ranges of 1 to 3 cents, soybeans closed around Vfc higher; wheat was as much higher; corn gained around % cent and oats moved up around Vi cents. Soybean oil futures gained around 15 points but meal prices were a shade lower. Iced broilers gained around 10 points in a late wave of buying and short covering. The weather also was a factor in some of the selling. A 30- day forecast indicated, too, that generally favorable weather would prevail in October over the midsection of the country where the biggest crops arc grown. At the close, soybeans were up around VA cents, November 3.10%; wheat gained VA cents, December 1.48%; corn gained about % cents, December 1.13 '/i; and oats were Vz higher December 69 Va cents.
