Long, Dist. Mgr. Phone 422-2101 TV's Big Three: 'Bonanza', 'Lucy Show', 'Balinan' By SANDRA HINSO.V The A. C. Nielsen television ralinjs have lost a great deal of their interest and significance now that the networks have practically completed the decisions on 1 snows will be dropped and which will bo retained next season.

Nevertheless, for those who are interested, it could be noted that ABC's "Batman" in the Thursday night edition climbed to Hie number three position for the two week period ending March 20. Batman's estimated audience was exceeded only by NBC's "Bonanza" and CBS' "The Pj IS IT TRUE WE HAVE A LOT OF YES MEN AT COLONIAL? "demands-" (apparently as reflected by the Nielsen ratings) will take network programs next fall. The 19(i5-B6 season was heavily loaded with comedy-fantasy programs, most stimulated by the big rating success the previous season of ABC's "Bewitched," and the fair acceptance of the two comedy-horror shows, "The Munsters" and "The Addams Family." Waturally the networks overworked the trend so by next September five of the seven shows featuring talking automobiles, reconstituted Frankenstein monsters, spooky suburbanites, a Martian superman and an apprentice angel will have disappeared. "Bewitched" survived, and so did "I Dream of Jeannie." The latter's success was a complete surprise to me. The big flap about attracting the "younger generation" seems to have been a failure since "Shindig" and "Hullabaloo" are already out of the running.

Tha youngsters seem not to have liked the shows about teen-age girls and "The Patty Duke Show," "Gidget" and "Tammy" are all expected to be gone by fall. However the sensational arrival of "Batman," reminds us that the young-in-mind are not yet to be ignored. Two efforts at rjuality dramatic series failed miserably to make the audience grade. "Slattery's People" an invalid during its first season and its health failed to improve when it was given a second chance. "The Trials of O'Brien" just never found its audience, Miss I.owry claims.

Mason" managed to keep a respectable Nielsen rating, but is simply dying, "another victim of Sandra Hinson the unconquerable Cartwrights of according to Miss Lowry. The last of the prime-time doctor shows, "Ben Casey" and "Dr. Kildare" and the last of the old-fashioned situation comedies, "Donna Reed" and "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" appear to have expired from simple neglect. Despite the popularity of the James Bond-type spy series, several failed. They include "Amos Burke Secret Agent." "Blue Light," "The Private Life of Henry Phyfe," "Honey West" and "The Baron." THESE VARIOUS INDICATIONS of audience displeasure do not mean that viewers will be afforded more adult entertainment next year.

To the contrary. "The trend and the entire mass appetite." Time Magazine quoted CBS programing Chief Mike Dann last week, "is toward larger-than-life drama. Anything true, about real people and real problems, is out." CITING CBS' "SECRET AGENT" as one of the more adult, realistic of the spy shows, UPI television reviewer Rick DuBrow moaned at length about its second cancellation from the network. The English import has twice In the past two seasons filled in at midseason or thereabouts, and both times it has been a solid winner and commanded a large and faithful audience. "The best that we can do is hope that the network will continue, as in the past, to keep the show on tap as a future midseason replacement." Du Brow says.

Du Brow reports that he has received well over 100 letters (he works in Hollywood) from viewers and readers offering unsolicited praise and now protesting the impending cancellation again. He quoted one letter from Mrs. Dorothy Stewart of Orange Park, who wrote "my week isn't complete without my Saturday night excursion" with the British series, "I am just captivated by the sophistication of this program." she added. "They make every scene count." BASEBALL NOTE: WHOO Radio plans to carry all the games of the new Atlanta Braves and WABR Radio has signed up to carry the White Sox contests. Both teams open their seasons today.

rv -M mm ma mm g-rj Lucy Show." The Wednesday night episode was number 22 on the list. Other programs' in the top 10 were NBC's "Danny Thomas Special," CBS' "Red Skeltnn Show," "Beverly Hillbillies," "Andy Griffith Show," ABC's "Bewitched," CBS' "Cinmer Pyle" and "Clrrrn Acres." In the overall Nielsen average of prime evening shows, CBS continued to lead with a rating of 19.7 with ABC nnd NBC tied at 18.3. CYNTHIA I.OWRY, ASSOCIATED TRESS television writer, has attempted to analyze why some of the programs failed this year, and where the public's Where rke ciuiIJ you find a better pl.ue for "yes men" than at a bank?
