Box FOREWNNEWS COMMENTARY By PHIL NEWSOM UP I Foreign News Analyst ' Notes from the foreign' news cables: Watered Down MLF: The British, are going to go all out in their attempt to sell a watered-down. version of the American - designed multi-lateral nuclear force for NATO. Chief salesman will be British Foreign Secretary Patrick Gordon Walker who will -be lobbying among Allied leaders when they start their meetings Tuesday. The United States and West Germany want a 25-ship naval force armed with nuclear weapons and manned by mixed crews drawn from the NATO nations. The British think such a force too large and also have some questions about financing. The Germans are cool to the British stand and France has said it is not interested in any nuclear force in which the United States will have a veto. Improved Viet Cong: The Communist Viet Cong rebels are improving and standardizing their regular units right down to the soldiers' belt buckles. American officers in the northern* part of the country say main force units there have adopted a distinctive uniform including long - sleeved black polo shirts, black knee- length shorts and brass belt buckles decorated with a red star. The regular' units have adopted and standardized a rubber and canvas jungle boot similar to that worn by the French army in the Indochina war. In the southern part of the country regular units have taken to wearing a standard blue uniform, covering it with black pajamas for night attacks. New Chinese and Czech machineguns have also been captured from the southern Reds in the last few weeks, including some designed for antiaircraft warfare. Only A Beginning: The strike of 2.5 million government employes and workers in nationalized industries last [Friday is likely to be only a foretaste of even tougher action by organized labor in France early in 1965. President Charles de Gaulle has ordered the government to stand firm. But the unions refuse any longer to accept the argument that wage boosts must be held to 4. per cent annually in order to hold the line against further inflation. Wages in private industry have been going up much faster than those paid by the government. Down To The Wire: The debate within the six-nation European Common Market over standardized grain prices is expected to go right down to Christmas Eve. De Gaulle has given the member nations, especially Germany, until the end of the year to reach agreement or face the possibility that France will withdraw from the market completely. Some sort of compromise is expected. | Lighter Side By DICK 1 WEST United Press International WASHINGTON (UPI) -^Ono of the duties of a newspaperman is to investigate rumors to see whether they are true or false. Last weekend, when I was at a fox hunt near Southern Pines, N. C., I heard a rather interesting rumor .regarding the sex life of pine trees. A person who claimed to *>a "in the know" told me that pine trees occasionally change sex for no apparent reason. A tree that starts out as a male winds up as a female, and vice vers.a. He said things get so confused that only another pine tree can tell which is which. My informant said he under, stood that paper mills, which' depend on pine tree for pulp, had undertaken a research program to try to determine what caused the changeover. Slow Motion Cameras He said he had heard that scientists were using slow motion cameras in hopes of photographing a pine tree in the act of transferring, so they could learn how the process works. When I returned to Washington, I checked out the rumor with Lon Dill of West Point, Va., one of the Eastern Seaboard's leading pineocolo- gists. •Dill, who works' for the Chesapeake Corp., a pulp and papeF firm, said there was nothing to it. He said the rumor apparently was a twisted version of some research that the paper industry has been doing in tree gentics. Dill said impartial and. unbiased studies have shown that "pine trees and other conifers are both male and female." Both In One "There is a male holly tree, for example, and a female holly tree," he said. "But the conifer wraps up both sexes it one tree. "The cone is the female portion. A flower which showers down a yellow pollen is the male portion. When they get together, you have little pine trees standing all over the place." Nicely put, I would say. When Dill explains the pine tree facts of life, it all seems fine and beautiful. He went on to say that the genetic research program was undertaken to develop "pedigreed pines." What happens is this: When a tree geneticist finds a superior pine tree, he obtains cutting. Rather than climbing to the high crown, he often takes a rifle and shoots down a limb, which is grafted to an ordinary tree. Then the cone is pollinateo from another superior tree and the seeds are planted in experimental plots. It has some of the aspects of a shotgun wedding, but if all goes well the woods will one day be full of superior pines.
