Aquanauts will be careful that Tuffy doesn't stick his snout into Sealab through the open bottom hatch. SHOULD TUFFY breath the helium atmosphere inside the Sealab. it could be fatal. Like humans, Tuffy has lungs, but he doesn't need to decompress after each dive. The lighter Sealab air could cause embolism, the obstruction of a blood vessel by air bubbles, Conda said.

Aquanaut William H. Tolbert 39, an oceano-grapher from the Navy mine defense laboratory, Panama City, said he's interested in meeting Tuffy. "He's from my home town of Biloxi, said Tolbert. referring to where the mammal was caught. THE FIRST team was reported "resting very well" in the decompression chamber.

Ufi A versatile porpoise named Tuffy joined aquanauts of Sealab 2 Monday to assume tasks usually handled by watch dogs, guides, messengers and mailmen. "Tuffy is so well-trained he can come down and tap a lost diver on the shoulder and hand him a life line," said Kenneth J. Conda, 32. CONDA, A Navy torpedo-man first class, and John F.

Reaves, 36, photographer's mate first class, are the aquanauts assigned to work with Tuffy. Tuffy is 7 feet long and weighs 270 pounds. He carries scars from encounters with sharks, which explains his name. Tuffy, trained by the Navy at Point Mugu, was wrapped in a blanket and flown to Sealab by helicopter. His pen is on the surface near the staging vessel Berkone.

"WE THINK Tuffy will be able to make as many as 20 runs to Sealab every day, delivering mail and messages," Conda said. "If a diver gets in trouble we just call up to tne Berkone and they'll send Tuffy down to me," he said. "Tuffy can make the 205-foot trip in 45 seconds." NEW YORK Wl James Meredith, whose name was almost synonymous with the word "integration" three years ago, Monday became a Columbia Law School student who won't have time for civil rights demonstrations.

Meredith, registering at Columbia with a $2,000 scholarship from the university, said almost all his time is going to be devoted to law studies. THE 32-YEAR-old Negro whose registration at University of Mississippi three years ago set off bloody rioting, told of his plans at a news conference after filing his registration cards at Columbia. He said that since his enrollment at Mississippi there has been some advance in educational opportunities for Negroes, but added: "The day must come when the average Negro student will have the same chance as the average white student." MEREDITH, who was graduated from Mississippi in August 1 963, and did graduate work at Ibadanu University in Western Nigeria during a year of travel in Africa, Europe and the Middle East, was awarded scholarships from three law schools. He chose Columbia, over John Marshall in Chicago and Indiana University, and has rented an apartment near Columbia for himself, his wife, Mary June, and 5-year-old son James Jr. TOO MUCH INVENTORY? MP Superior Court Judge Laur-a T. Wren Monday ordered the 16-year-old daughter of an Ohio minister to face charges as an adult in the slaying of two New Hampshire men in Northern Arizona. Coconino County Atty. Jerry Smith immediately filed the first degree murder charges against Dixie Radcliff of Amesville, Ohio, in the deaths of Robert Willis, 23, and Halvor Johnson, 28, both of Newport, N. H.

MISS RADCLIFF was arrested Thursday along with Donald M. Boggs, 23. Londonderry, Ohio. Sheriff's deputies said Boggs had admitted killing Willis and Johnson and two other murders in Utah and Texas. After studying statements Miss Radcliff made to officers and conferring with a social worker, Judge Wren said, "I have decided she is a person of average intelligence and cognizant of the circumstances in which she now finds herself." William Peckman, a county psychiatric social worker, said he feels the girl knows right from wrong and has adequate intelli gence to defend herself.

"SHE INDICATES a passive rebellion against her home and religious life," said Peckham. Judge Wren appointed attorney William Egan of a Flagstaff law firm to defend Miss Radcliff. iff's deputies said FBI agents and Texas Rangers were in Flagstaff Monday talking with Boggs about auto thefts in Texas, Ohio, West Virginia and possibly several Midwestern states. IN ADDITION to admitting the murders of Willis and Johnson in Arizona, officers said Boggs has confessed to the slaying of Warren Lenker, a Brigham Young University student from Elizabethville, and Harold B. Flory, San Antonio, Tex.
