SPORTS DIGEST Murphy ofBcially turning pro By The Associated Press SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Troy Murphy is done at Notre Dame. Ten days after saying he was keeping his options open by submitting his name to the NBA draft but not signing with an agent, the two-time AU- American said Friday he had decided to turn pro. "By putting my name in there I saw this is something I want to do, and I want to do now," Murphy said. "It got me going and reminded me of the dream I've had my entire life." Murphy said the decision was harder than he expected, saying he thought heading into this year this would be his last in college. The 6-foot-ll forward could have waited until June 20, a week before the draft to make a decision, but said he decided now because he felt he was ready Coach Mike Brey, Murphy's third coach at Notre Dame in three years, joked that he knew Murphy was ready when he finally took a charge in his final game with the Irish. Murphy is the first player to leave Notre Dame early for the NBA draft since Adrian Dantley left as a junior following the 1975-76 season. Dantley was the sixth overall pick by the then- Buffalo Braves. KANSAS ST. 8, UCLA 5 — At Manhattan, Josh Cavender "drove in three runs and Kansas State took advantage of four UCLA errors Friday to win 8-5 in the first baseball meeting between the two schools. The Wildcats (18-21) went ahead 4-3 with a three-run fifth. UCLA (25-14) took back the lead on single runs in the fourth and fifth, but Kansas State tied the score in the sixth and went ahead by scoring three more times in the seventh. Ben Francisco, Eric Reece and Preston Griffin had solo homers for UCLA. Winning pitcher Scott Tallman relieved Luke Robertson in the seventh and held UCLA to two hits the rest of the way SHOCKERS WHIP NORTHERN IOWA— At Waterloo, Iowa, Brad Wright hit a home run and two doubles and drove in five runs in leading Wichita State to an 8-3 victory over Northern Iowa Friday night at Waterloo, Iowa. The Shockers trailed 1-0 after five innings, but scored four runs in the top of the sixth. Northern Iowa made it 4-3 with two in the bottom of the sixth, but the Shockers (31-14, overall, 13-4 Missouri Valley Conference) sealed the deal with four more in the top of the seventh. Justin Mamreau (6-2) was the winning pitcher, giving up six hits and three runs in 7 2/3 innings. Nic Unga (7-1) took the loss. He gave up eight runs, but only two were earned. The Huskies committed three errors. GEORGE WASHINGTON COACH TOM PENDERS RESIGNS — George Washington coach Tom Fenders resigned Friday, ending a week of scandal involving possible NCAA rules violations and charges against a player. Fenders quit effective June 30, saying he was burned out. Earlier this week, George Washington vice president Robert Chernak confirmed that four men's basketball players had used the telephone access code of Fenders' son, assistant coach Tommy Fenders Jr., to make more than $1,400 worth of long-distance calls during the season. Chernak said the calls violated NCAA rules. JANZEN LEADS HOUSTON OPEN — Lee Janzen shot a 4- under-par 68 Friday to take a one-stroke lead over Joe Durant after the second round of the Houston Open. Janzen, the two-time U.S. Open winner, had consecutive bogeys on Nos. 8 and 9, missing makable putts, but birdied three of his final four holes for a 9-under 135 total. Durant, who shared the first-round lead with Janzen, shot a 69. Tom Per nice Jr. (67) was two back at 137, followed by Hal Sutton (68) and Kevin Sutherland (69) at 138. REDSKINS CUT CENTERS, SIGN GREER — Larry Centers, the NFL's career leader in receptions by a running back, was cut Friday by the Washington Redskins. The Redskins also signed free agent Donovan Greer, a nickel back with the Buffalo Bills the past three seasons. Cutting Centers saves the Redskins, who were barely under the NFL's salary cap, about $1.6 million next season. Centers signed a four-year deal last year. Centers has 685 catches for 5,683 yards
