CST Atwater Kent Hour. North Minnesota Pioneer Dies Wednesday, Aged 70 Hoveland. Feb. 2S. (AP) Adolph Thorson.

70, world adventurer and for nearly two score years a fisherman of this section is dead. He succumbed Wednesday after being ill for several weeks. His death removes a picturesque character who has become known to many summer visitors to northern Minnesota. Born in Christiana, Norway, Thorson ran away to sea when he was 14 years old. He sailed before the mast on ships of many nations and had adventures in many lands.

Several times he narrowly escaped death in ship wrecks. Later he came to northern Minnesota because that appealed to him as being like his native Norway. He "squatted" on the land, to which later he acquired title. terior of- that edifice. The Eureka Whist club will be entertained by Miss Anna Talbot this evening.

Syphillis takes its toll from those of more mature years, while arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and the degenerative processes of the heart affect mainly those in the oldest age group.

Importance of the heart disease problem, however, cannot be completely measured in terms of deaths. Disability from an impaired heart, that is, the amount of sickness and invalidism which foreruns death, is of great- personal and social importance. And diseases of the heart usually tend to cripple the sufferer for a long period, often reducing his productiveness and placing upon him, his family, or the state, the heavy economic burdens of medical, nursing and hospital care.1 In the United States it is estimated that two out 'of every hundred persons have' heart' disease. Three out, of, every hundred, men drafted. during the world war were rejected on account of heart disease.

More, than 200,000 children of school age arevictims of heart disease. Many cases of heart disease can be prevented. Most cases of heart disease can be so managed that the handicapped will have a prolonged life and usefulness and be relieved from suffering. i LATE TRAINS ARE BARRED BY GATES Habeas Corpus Hearing Demanded Merely for Sake of Trip to Court. Albany, N.

Y. (UP) Convicts who pick up a smattering of law by poring over the penal code, especially the sections dealing with the writ of habeas corpus, are a source of annoyance to the attorney general's office, district attorneys and the department of corrections. Nevertheless; they are allowed every opportunity to pursue their legal training in a practi.al way, although most of their applications for writs could be squashed on technicalities. Now and then an ingenious question of law is raised by a prisoner to support his contention he is being confined illegally. Usually, however, their complaints are regarded by the state as ridiculous.

Only two or three writs have been sustained and the prisoner allowed freedom, in the memory of Dr. Raymond F. C. Kieb, commissioner of corrections since 192" and member of the department for 25 years. Persistence is a marked trait in what the commissioner 'terms "sea lawyers," he told the United Press.

This is especially true of the inmates of Matteawan' State hospital, of which Dr. Kieb formerly was superintendent. One 'inmate of that institution, Kiel-believes, established a record by procuring no less than 50 writs, none of which 'was1 successful. Another once obtained three writs calling for his production in three different counties on the' same' day and at the same hour "Of course I could produce him only in one place," remarked the commissioner. "That was one of the things that brought about an amendment to the criminal code providing writs must be heard in the county where the institution is 6ituated." Only recently a prisoner at Auburn busied himself preparing applications for new trials and for appeals, forc- Washington, Feb.

2S. (AP) Chairman Graham of the House judiciary committee decided to grant the advocates of the repeal of the Eighteenth amendment, another day, next Wednesday. This decision was reached after it had been ascertained that the list of anti-prohibition witnesses waiting to be heard could not be completed by nightfall today. Mr. S.

When sounding of the bottom were first made, a boulder of considerable size was found, which, after several fruitless efforts, was finally removed, and the work of filling the caisson with masonry begun. After the pier was sufficiently filed with masonry so as to rest on the bottom it was weighted with heavy stone to compel it to sink.

It was soon discovered, however, that the pier only sank on one end, and upon investigation another rock was found underneath the caisson. All of the loose Stone. and a good deal of the masonry n4d to be removed so as to allow the caisson to rise again with its weight. All. effort to remove the rock so far have failed and the accident has already delayed the work on that pier several days.

County Commissioners to county to oppose them in court on nearly a dozen occasions.

"It presents rather a serious prob leni at times," Kieb asserted. "Naturally the men must be guarded when they are taken to court and our guard forces are limited. It is particularly troublesome at Dannemore, since the nearest court is at Plattsburgh, about 12 miles away." Most of the prisoners regard their trips t6 court, which they bring abou' by procuring writs, more as excursions than in the hope of winning freedom. "That is the big factor," said Dr. Kieb.

"It breaks the monotony of institutional 'life. They can appear in court and argue their own cases which is balm for their ego. They may get a meal at a hotel. It's a lark for them and they get quite a thrill out of it." Many of the applications for writs which cross the commissioner's desk would be regarded by lawyers as singularly homely. One received recently was written on the back of a picture postcard and in substance merely said "I want a writ." Now and then a judge will hear a MARSHMALL0WS, Per lb.

17c Ask Added Jail Space BY HERBERT PLUSHER ashington Perhaps the most famous of all brands of wit and humor in the capital certainly on the hill-is that of Speaker Nick Longworth. Great is his reputatiori as the author of stories and wise-cracks that may be successfully retold. Those who come in contact with him are eager to be around when Speaker Nick is in a jovial mood. A familiar query is "Have you heard Nick's latest?" So popular is the speaker that whenever, one of his colleagues is especially anxious to impress the folks back home, he takes one of his constituents in to see Longworth. He never fails.

to make a visitor feel at home. Recently a congressman took a visitor from home into the speakers office; "Mr. Speaker," he said, "this is Mr. who has come down to V'ash ington to find out what congress is doing." "Well," drawled Longworth, "if he finds out I hope he lets us know." Minneapolis, Feb. 28.
